As we celebrate Grace and her wonderful life, we think of all the loving memories that we have all shared. Grace was born in
Pittston, Pennsylvania on September 11, 1923. Growing up in upstate Pennsylvania, Grace was often called a gifted "Coal Cracker", by Philly physicians later in her nursing life. Moving from PA coal country, Grace made her family home in Northeast Philadelphia.
Grace attended Saint John's High School and graduated in 1941. She enrolled in Germantown Hospital School of Nursing, graduated, and went to work as the head nurse on the psychiatric ward and then onto the Medical-Surgical floor. Grace then joined the United States Army as an Army Nurse. During World War II, Grace served aboard the US Army Hospital Ship Frances Y. Slanger caring for our badly injured soldiers and POWs. Although not part of her job description, her extensive nursing duties often included her contacting the MPs about the mischievous plans of our more capable Purple Heart recipients. Aboard her US Army Hospital Ship during the war, she made 5 roundtrips across the Atlantic Ocean, with each return trip, she was caring for more injured warriors. Grace was Honorably Discharged with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant after World War II ended.
Returning to her civilian life, Grace continued her education at University of Scranton for advanced nursing studies.
On September 6,1946, Grace married Bill Morris, fulfilling his dream of becoming the "luckiest man on earth". Bill also served during WWII. As if "luckiest" wasn't enough, Bill often said that he was the "wealthiest man on Earth", out of his deep gratitude for Grace and their children. While raising their five children, Grace worked as a Private Duty Nurse at Nazareth Hospital, and later as a nursing instructor at the Philadelphia Training Institute.
Grace was a devoted wife, lovingly dedicated mother and grandmother. Her great-grandchildren now number ten. She served as the neighborhood nurse, with neighbors stopping by for everything from their daily insulin shots, to infections and wounds (normal ailments in a very nice Philly neighborhood). Grace devoted much time to her volunteer efforts throughout the Saint Jerome's Parish, and the Philadelphia Winchester Swim Club as the official Swim Meet Scorekeeper.
As we celebrate her life, we are overwhelmingly grateful for the positive impact that Grace has made on all of us, who knew, or just met her, and loved her. She has long earned her loving nickname, "Amazing Grace". Even seasoned caregivers have repeated their personal affection for Grace by saying, "Grace is easy to love".
Truly "Amazing"
