Gregory Thomas Childress
Age 38, passed away on Monday, August 12, 2024, after a 6-month battle with brain cancer. Despite receiving the devastating diagnosis in February, Greg fought valiantly to extend his life and continue to be a presence for those who loved him. He met many dedicated professionals along the way (too many to name!) who helped him fight this cancer. Many thanks to the dedicated doctors and staff at Froedtert Hospital, especially Dr. Max Krucoff, neurosurgery, and Dr. Jennifer Connelly, oncology, and their teams.
Greg is survived by his parents, Susan and Frank, his sister, Jennifer, and his beloved children: Lily, Aaron, and Kira, as well as an aunt, uncle, niece, cousins, and many friends.
Greg was diagnosed with Type 1 Juvenile Diabetes when he was only four years old. He learned to manage his diabetes at a young age and continued to live without any complications throughout his life. Greg attended Elmbrook Schools, participating in many athletic and social activities, especially football and track. He was a very fast sprinter, and during his 7th and 8th grade years, he qualified for the National Junior Olympics and the State Games of America, competing in the 100 meters and 200 meters. He also excelled as a running back and defensive back for his Junior Lancers football team. Unfortunately, his football career was cut short freshman year when he sustained a serious spine injury. He then focused his energy on competing for the high school track team, where he received a varsity letter in track. He graduated from Brookfield Central High School in 2004 and went on to work at GE Healthcare. Greg married Bianca in 2014 and moved to California. He lived and worked in California for several years before returning to Brookfield and taking a job at US Bank, where he worked up until his death. Greg was quite handy with computers, and he loved playing video games with his son and a large crew of online friends. He also loved watching the Packers and the Brewers, and in his last days, the Olympics.
Greg will be greatly missed by his friends and family, but we are all relieved that he is no longer in pain. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Breakthrough T1D (juvenile diabetes research) at www2.breakthrought1d.org or the Glioblastoma Moon Shot research project at gifts.mdanderson.org.
