GATESVILLE, TX - Pastor Greg Demmitt, age 67 of Gatesville, TX, fell asleep in the Lord on Sunday, October 29, 2023, at his home.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 4, 2023, at Cornerstone Church in Gatesville, with Pastors Steve Taylor and Tom New officiating. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to services at the church. Funeral services in Ohio, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at Lawrenceville Church of God in Springfield, Ohio. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow at Curtis Cemetery in Tipp City, Ohio at 1:30 p.m.
Greg Edgar Demmitt was born on November 23, 1955, in Wilmington, Ohio to Dwaine and Joyce Overholser Demmitt. He grew up on his family's farm near Troy, Ohio.
He graduated from Miami East High School in Troy and went on to attend Oregon Bible College in Oregon, Illinois and later Abilene Christian University, earning a master's degree in conflict resolution.
He married Karen Circle of Springfield, Ohio in 1979.
After an internship in Phoenix, Arizona, he accepted a pastorate position at Country Chapel in Michigantown, Indiana in 1979. Throughout his ministry, he pastored churches in Hammond, Louisiana and Tempe, Arizona, until moving to Gatesville in 2008, where he was the current pastor at Cornerstone Church of God. He served in the ministry for 44 years and was on the board of the Church of God General Conference. He also was a newspaper sports editor and for the last few years, worked in the environmental field for the energy sector in the state of Texas and California.
Greg loved sports, attending church youth camps as a camper and later a counselor. He enjoyed taking his family on long road trips to national parks and playing bass guitar for the Christian band, WYSIWYG's. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and was a great "connector of people."
He was preceded in death by his father, Dwaine Demmitt.
Greg is survived by his wife, Karen Demmitt; children, Daniel Demmitt, Allison Valenzuela and husband, Eric, Michael Demmitt; grandchildren, Robbie, Ryan and Elias Valenzuela; mother, Joyce Demmitt Newnam; brothers, Alan Demmitt, Kevin Demmitt and wife, Audrey, David Demmitt and wife, Debbie and John Demmitt and wife, Brittany.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Cornerstone Church, 338 State School Road, Gatesville, TX 76528.
