Gregory Thomas Norrell, a passionate geologist, published author, photographer, and lover of the wild Rockies, passed away peacefully on August 9, 2025, surrounded by his cherished family under the care of Symbii Home Health and Hospice.

Raised in Georgia, Greg's curiosity about the natural world led him to earn his PhD in Geology from the State University of New York in Albany, New York, in 1989. In 1992, he moved to Idaho Falls to work for the Idaho National Laboratory where he was awarded a certificate of appreciation for his significant contribution to the large-scale aquifer pumping and infiltration test, a testament to his scientific dedication.

Greg's love for the outdoors was boundless. He skied the powdery slopes of Grand Targhee in Wyoming each winter and married the love of his life, Melanie, atop Fred's Mountain in the summer of 2022. An avid hiker, he sought out the solitude of remote destinations like The Maze in Canyonlands National Park, and was a familiar face in Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks where he faithfully photographed the iconic Grizzly #399.

A talented guitarist with a flair for technology, Greg transformed his basement into a vibrant recording studio, a hub for Idaho Falls musicians in the 1990s. Later, he repurposed the space for a thriving photography business, blending his artistic and technical talents. His warmth, creativity, and adventurous spirit touched everyone around him, from fellow musicians to the families who welcomed his shih tzu puppies that he bred into their homes.

Greg was preceded in death by his parents, Lemuel Nathaniel Norrell and Mildred Garner Norrell; his stepmother, Anne Mackey Norrell; his brother, Stephen Michael Norrell; and his father-in-law, Frank Murdock.

He leaves behind his devoted wife, Melanie Murdock Norrell; his daughter, Catherine Brandon (husband, Lee); his son, Michael Norrell (wife, Maritza); brothers, David Norrell (wife, Chloe) and Patrick Norrell (wife, Irina); mother-in-law, Connie Murdock; and six adored grandchildren who brought him endless joy.

Greg's legacy lives on in the landscapes he loved and photographed, the music he played, the words he wrote, the scientific contributions he made, and the family he treasured.

A Celebration of Life will be held privately with his family.
