Obituary published on Legacy.com by Wojstrom Funeral Home & Crematory - Granite City on Dec. 11, 2024.
Greg Perkins, "Perk", 76, of Collinsville passed away, Tuesday, December 10, 2024 at his home. He was born August 18, 1948 in Granite City to Marvin and Rosmary (nee: Stack) Perkins. He married Susan Sponemann January 29, 1977.
Greg graduated from Triad High School, Class of 1966, where he competed and broke records on the track and cross country team, served as a librarian and was a member of the Librarian's club. He enlisted in the US Army in 1968 and was assigned to the Intelligence Division due to his problem solving skills. He was discharged honorably after an unexpected hospitalization. Greg worked at Illinois Bell from June of 1969 until 1984.
Greg coordinated the very first fundraiser for Anderson Hospital. It involved getting friends together to play the KXOK All-star Basketball Team.
His business, Tel-Star, installed communication systems for KSHE Radio, United States Coast Guard, in addition to many churches and homes.
Greg graduated from SIUE and was on the National Dean's List and received the Ruby Bratten Award in 1991. He was also a member of SIUE's Geographical Society. He received many awards over his life for work and school including multiple awards from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and as a corporate travel agent.
Greg was a certified scuba diver, past member of the Moose Lodge, Looking Glass Corvette Club and was a lifetime member of the Collinsville karate club. He also served as an altar boy at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Granite City. Greg also assisted Rev. Dr. Dale Meyer with Bible Class Broadcasts of Holy Cross Lutheran Church on KFUO Radio.
He is survived by his wife, Susan Perkins of Collinsville; daughter, Abby (Chris) Green of Pocahontas; sons, Stephen (Jennifer) Perkins of Neptune Beach, FL and Chad (Nikki) Perkins of Caseyville; four grandchildren, Zackery Perkins, Logan Green, Kaidynn Green and Taylor Perkins; brothers, John (Sandy) Perkins, Donald "Joe" Perkins, Jeff Perkins and Mark (Eileen) Perkins; sisters, Beverly Hudson and Mary Timms and his dog Bear.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Gail Modrovsky, Theresa Perkins and Diane Mertz.
Greg greatly loved his family and was a wonderful husband, father and grandpa. Susan was blessed to be married to her best friend, Greg, in 1977. Even after 47 years of marriage they could be seen walking hand in hand and doing everything they could for each other. He told wonderful stories and jokes. Greg loved striking up conversations with anyone he met. He was always willing to lend someone a hand and had such a great laugh that it sometimes brought tears to your eyes. He loved dancing, reading, rock & roll music, golf, beaches, boating, race cars and his corvettes. He coached his children's soccer and basketball teams and was known to his friends as MacGyver because he could fix anything.
The family will hold a Celebration of Life Saturday, January 11, 2025 from 12:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at the Collinsville American Legion. In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted by Sue Perkins to help with expenses. Sammies will be provided at the Celebration of Life. Side dishes will be appreciated.
