Augusta, GA – Entered into rest on Friday, April 8, 2022, Gregory C. Poteet, 50, loving husband of 19 years to Ashley Palmer Poteet. Family members, in addition to his wife, include his sons: Reid Carlton Poteet (17), Cannon Lewis Poteet (14), Brody O'Connell Poteet (11), and Jude Campbell Poteet (7); parents: Thomas C. Poteet, Sr. (Patricia Atha) and Kerry Vaughan Poteet Walker (Joe); siblings: Anna Poteet Lewis (Mike), Thomas C. "Buzz" Poteet, Jr. (Lastarr), Margaret Elizabeth Poteet (Ben Smith), Stephen W. Poteet (Tara), Andrew V. Poteet (Carolina), and Clare Poteet Boulus (Greg); father-in-law and mother-in-law: Jesse Palmer III and Carol Palmer; sister-in-law: Nan Palmer Lynch (Brad); brother-in-law: Jesse Campbell Palmer IV (Christy); and favorite uncle to 25 nieces and nephews.
Greg attended St. Mary on the Hill Catholic School, was a 1990 graduate of Aquinas High School, and attended Augusta College. He owned and operated Georgia Outdoor Services. He was a member of St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church, Coastal Conservation, Augusta Sailing Club, Knights of Columbus, Irish American Heritage Society, and Augusta Rugby Club. Greg Poteet was a brother to many, friend to all. He loved his parents and siblings fiercely. He would hurdle any obstacle to fill a need that any of them had. His love and loyalty to them was evident through his prayers and desires he had for their lives.
To know Greg was to love Greg. His larger-than-life personality had a way of drawing all near to him. His charisma, whit, and passion for life was magnetic. He was the founder of fun and exuded joy. He knew no stranger and included all. He loved the outdoors and was happiest with those he loved on the water, grilling, and tunes cranked up always. Greg had a servant's heart. He was always willing to help a friend or stranger. He wanted to build things and leave things better than they were...zip ties, duct tape and all! He could naturally build community wherever he was and that is where you wanted to be.
Greg was a dedicated husband and an adoring father. His pride for his family was evident to all. He was the very definition of a family man. His four sons bear his image and describe him as strong, brave, loving and caring. Greg was a man of great character. His faith and love for Jesus Christ shaped the man he was. His heart to know Christ more created a desire to love, serve and lead his family in a way that pleased the Lord rather than man. He hungered to know God's word and understand it better. We all are the beneficiaries of that. His death leaves a void that can never be filled, but a legacy that will never be forgotten.
A funeral Mass will be held Monday, April 18, 2022 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church with Fr. Mark Ross celebrant. Interment will follow in Westover Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. at Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors, 214 Davis Rd., Augusta, GA 30907 (706) 364-8484. Please sign the guestbook at www.thomaspoteet.com

It is difficult to believe a man so strong and full of life as Greg is no longer with us, and at such a young age. You had no option but to look up to Greg, both literally and figuratively. The first time I shook hands with him it was as if I were shaking hands with Beowulf. He was a great father and a loving husband who set a great example for his sons on how to live their lives, in work, in play and in their faith. We could all do with being a little more like Greg Poteet. I am happy our marriages brought us to be part of the same extended family. The obituary provided by his family is very well said and does him the credit he deserves.

With heartfelt sympathy for each of you, I take a moment to send a special message to Reid. This is from the "old lady" neighbor whose backyard jungle you have been helping me clear these past few months. We work together well-you and I---tackling the weeds and cutting back tree limbs. The place looks much better. From our agreeable conversation, I learned much about you and the loving and respectful relationship you have with your family. I can imagine the darkness of grief that washes over you. Reid, you are a young man of good character and a strong work ethic. You will rise to the challenge. Your younger brothers look up to you. In the emotional healing that takes time, look out for yourself as well. You have friends-young and old-who care about you.
