Gregory Ashby Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sarah L. Carter's Funeral Home - Southside on Feb. 11, 2026.
Gregory Ashby lived a life defined by integrity, intellect, service, and quiet strength. A respected business leader, trusted mentor, and compassionate soul, Greg's legacy is one of excellence balanced with humility, warmth, and love for those around him.

Born in Akron, Ohio, Greg, his brother Jeffrey, and sister Linda (deceased) were raised by Helen and John Ashby, Jr. (both deceased). Their parents were great role models who emphasized hard work and education for personal growth.

In 1971, Greg graduated from Central State University with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. He was immediately hired, beginning his professional career in Akron with the international accounting firm now known as Deloitte.

During the eight years he was employed by Deloitte, he took an 18-month break to work as a program manager with the National Urban League, demonstrating his desire to use his talents to uplift others. After rejoining Deloitte, he relocated to Los Angeles, where he earned his Certified Public Accountant credential, further strengthening a foundation for his distinguished career. He also earned an MBA from Pepperdine University.

In Los Angeles, Greg was recruited and he accepted an accounting position at TRW. Greg was again recruited and he joined Northrop Grumman.

At Northrop Grumman, Greg served as Director of International Compliance and Taxation for the company's Information Technology Sector. He became a designated Certified Export Compliance Officer. In this role, he was entrusted with establishing, coordinating, and executing comprehensive export, import, and tax strategies across fourteen countries and forty-six states. His team supported operations that generated billions of dollars in revenue. He traveled extensively including long-term assignments in Italy, Australia and Saudi Arabia. After an accomplished 25-year career with Northrop Grumman, Greg retired.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Greg believed deeply in community service. While living in Los Angeles, his service included working closely with the leadership of the NAACP Los Angeles Branch, strongly supporting their tenets of equality and empowerment. When he moved to Virginia, he volunteered with the Big Brothers Program, offering guidance and encouragement to young men. He was also active with the Washington, DC chapter of Concerned Black Men. And, as a member of the Largo Community Church in Mitchellville, Maryland, he obtained his certification to teach math to elementary-age students attending an after-school church program.

For fifty-six years, Greg was a proud and devoted member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, initiated into the Delta Zeta Chapter at Central State University. While living in Maryland, he was active with the Bowie-Mitchellville (MD) Alumni Chapter. He was involved with the Kappa League program and served a term as Treasurer of the Chapter's Foundation. When he moved to Jacksonville, Florida, he joined the Jacksonville (FL) Chapter serving on the Kappa Care Committee. Greg cherished fellowship, service, and lifelong friendships.

In retirement, Greg embraced life with curiosity and joy. He devoted more time to his love of travel and exploration. A passionate sports fan, he found special happiness in attending global events, including the Olympics in Beijing and the World Cup in South Africa. For relaxation, Greg enjoyed playing poker. On two occasions, he entered the World Series of Poker Senior's Tournament. Greg also loved entertaining friends and family at his home. His experiences were shared with his wife, Regina, and beautifully reflected his appreciation for culture, connection, and shared celebration.

Greg leaves behind family he held dear, whose lives were forever touched by his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering support. Greg will be remembered for his gentle spirit, generous heart, and steady presence-a man who led with compassion and inspired others simply by being himself. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered with love.
