Gregory Hoffmann Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Unger-Horner Funeral Home & Cremation Service - Rochelle on Feb. 23, 2026.

Rev. Gregory Edward Hoffmann 69, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, February 22, 2026, after a courageous battle with acute myeloid leukemia.

Born on March 26, 1956, in Winona, Minnesota, Greg was called into the pastoral ministry and faithfully served the Lord and His people for decades in Illinois and Wisconsin. Most recently, he served at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Woodstock, Illinois, where he shepherded his congregation with compassion, conviction, and unwavering devotion to Christ.

His life and ministry were anchored in the words of Colossians 2:2: “That their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God’s mystery, which is Christ.”

He longed for hearts strengthened in Christ, congregations united in love, and souls resting in the full assurance of salvation found in Him alone. The promise he proclaimed now sustains those who mourn him; that because Christ lives, those who die in Him shall live also.

On June 15, 2002, he married Tina, and together they built a life on partnership, ministry, and enduring love.

Greg embraced life with curiosity and gratitude. He loved to travel, to taste new foods, to raise a glass of good beer in good company, and to savor the simple joy of being somewhere new. Some of his happiest moments were spent outdoors, hunting alongside his boys — not only for the hunt itself, but for the quiet conversations, laughter, and bond that only time together can build. And in a way that was uniquely Greg, one of his favorite hunting traditions was sitting quietly in his tree stand, using that stillness to write his New Year’s letter to his congregation — blending his love for the outdoors with his deep devotion to his calling as a pastor. He was a devoted and steadfast husband, an amazing father, and a deeply loving grandfather. He led his family with quiet strength, prayed for them faithfully, and delighted in the joy of his grandchildren.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Tina; his children: Jason, Sara (Kyle), David (Jessica), Eric, Ashley (Sam), Brandon (Amber), and Caitlyn (Josh); and his cherished grandchildren Ashlee, Hunter, Arianna, Olive, Zoey, Tate, Jaxon, Wesley, Hailey, Charlotte, Brooklyn, Claire, Henry, Cheyenne, Blakelynn, and Charlotte. He is also survived by great grandchildren, Oakley and Baker.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Donald and Marion Hoffmann and sister, Holly Quinn.

A funeral service celebrating Greg’s life and proclaiming the resurrection hope he faithfully preached will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 401 St. Johns Road, Woodstock, Illinois, on Saturday, February 28th, 2026 at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Allan Buss officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:00 - 7:00 P.M., Friday, February 27 at St. John's Lutheran Church. Cremation care has been entrusted to the Unger-Horner Funeral Home and will follow the funeral service. Visit www.ungerhorner.com to sign the online guest book.

In lieu of flowers, gifts in Greg’s memory may be given to Tina to assist with medical and funeral expenses. The family is grateful for your prayers and support.
