Born Gregory Alan Holmes on March 16, 1966 in Marshalltown, Iowa, he was the son of Arlo and Margaret (Luther) Holmes. After graduating from Marshalltown High School with the class of 1985, he enlisted in the United States Army in 1986. He proudly served his country in the Army, continuing his service and dedication in the Army National Guard. He worked several jobs throughout the years, dedicating 13 years as a prison guard in Newton and most recently working at Meskwaki Casino.

Greg was united in marriage on September 21, 1996 to Stacie Gould and found pure joy “pushing her buttons.” They were blessed with their son, Shane, whom Greg was so proud of every single day. He enjoyed teaching Shane how to do things around the house, often teaching him what NOT to do in the process, which always got a good laugh. He had a warped sense of humor, embarrassingly funny dance moves (fingers snapping, mouth agape and tongue out) and loved animals. He was an avid fan of Iowa State, KC Chiefs, LA Rams and Chicago Cubs. Greg was fascinated by all things military and also loved Nascar and racing, driving by the Iowa Speedway whenever he had a chance. Though he did not often use words to express it, he deeply cared for and loved his family to his core.

Greg is survived by his son, Shane Holmes; his mother, Margaret, siblings: Eileen (Ron) Claude and Dan Holmes; nephews: Matthew, Nathan and Joshua; and former spouse Stacie Holmes. He is preceded in death by his father Arlo and his older brother Carl.
