Gregory Allen Hoppes,69, devoted firefighter and beloved family man, passed away on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, in Delmar, Maryland, surrounded by his loving family. Born on May 4, 1956, in Springfield, Ohio, Greg dedicated his life to both his family and his career in public service. He was a son of the late Forest Lewis Hoppes and Frances Matilda (Strush) Hoppes.
After graduating from Wicomico Senior High School with the class of 1974, Greg began his professional journey as a baker at Sunbeam Bakery. He later served as a manager at Longlife Treated Wood Co. However, his true calling came in the early 1980s when he volunteered at the Salisbury Fire Department, Station 2, which is where he earned his nickname, "Poppa Hop." In 1986, he was hired by the Salisbury Fire Department, where he made a lasting impact over his 30-year career, ultimately rising to the rank of Lieutenant. His roles included serving as a Company Officer at Stations 1 and 16 and as the Maintenance and Supply Officer within Administrative Services. Greg's legacy continues through his children, with two of them proudly following in his footsteps as employees of the SFD.
Greg was known for his love of outdoor activities, including hunting, fishing, and camping. He cherished family camping trips to Cherrystone Campground and Frontier Town, where he created countless memories with his loved ones. Greg loved sports and was known as a long-time, faithful fan of the Redskins. His daily routine and steadfast fortitude will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.
Greg is survived by his devoted wife, Yvonne F. (Massey) Hoppes, who he married on December 7, 1979; his children, Brandon Hoppes and wife Katie, Matthew Hoppes and Megan Baker; and his cherished grandchildren, Wyatt Allen Hoppes, Brooks Everett Hoppes, Forest Matthew Hoppes, Ryan Alese Hoppes, Isaac James Baker, Gavin Joseph Baker, and Lillie Belle Baker. He is also survived by his brother, Mike Hoppes and wife Ruth, brothers-in-law, Dale Dechart and Dale Massey; sisters-in-law, Rochelle Outten and husband John and Annette Dixon and husband Joe, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by siblings, Jack Hoppes, Margaret Zlock, and Betty Dechart.
A Fireman's funeral service to celebrate Greg's life will take place on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the Short Funeral Home in Delmar, where a visitation will be held from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by a funeral service starting at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Wicomico Memorial Park in Salisbury.
