Gregory Shogren Obituary

Published by Legacy on Jan. 23, 2026.
Gregg was born on April 4, 1959, in Bemidji, Minnesota, while his family lived in Quiring Township. He spent his childhood on the family farm with his brothers and sisters, and during those early years he was introduced to the carpentry skills and practical know how that would later shape his life's work. Deeply rooted in the North Country from the start, Gregg graduated from Kelliher High School in 1977, carrying with him the foundation for the craft that would define his future.
Gregg's career was defined by mastery and craftsmanship. As a business owner and skilled carpenter, his work took him across the United States; from local homes in Tenstrike to projects in Kentucky and as far as Los Angeles. He built the home he shared with his wife, Darla, in Tenstrike from the ground up, a lasting testament to his skill. He further extended these talents at BI-CAP, where he served as a dedicated resource for local families. Gregg was known for his ability to translate complex trade knowledge into practical guidance, helping households improve their living conditions through energy efficiency. His work was rooted in a deep sense of service, a commitment also reflected in his many years as a member of the Tenstrike City Council.
Beyond his professional life, Gregg was a man of many gifts. A phenomenal cook, he learned his craft at a young age; his siblings fondly recall him at just 15 years old, tying a towel around his waist to prepare Thanksgiving dinner for the family. Cooking remained a lifelong passion and a way he expressed his love for others. He also possessed a green thumb, cultivating gardens so abundant that he happily shared the harvest with his Gull Lake neighbors. It was at Gull Lake where Gregg found his deepest peace; watching the sunsets, fishing, and enjoying pontoon rides with those he held dear.
Those who knew Gregg often described him as quiet and deep; a man of few words, but great thoughtfulness. To Gregg, "family" was a term that extended far beyond a family tree; it included the deep, meaningful friendships he cultivated over a lifetime. He took great pride in these bonds, and the unwavering support he received during his final days was a beautiful reflection of the love and loyalty he had poured into others.
Gregg passed away in his home on January 21, 2026, surrounded by loved ones. His legacy lives on in the homes he built, the gardens he grew, and the profound connections he forged. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of being called his friend.
A service honoring Gregg's life will be held on Saturday, January 31, at 10 a.m. at the Tenstrike Community Church. Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation one hour prior to the service, with a luncheon to follow.
