Gregory R. Taylor, Sr. 73, passed away on September 2, 2025. Funeral will be 11 am Tuesday, September 9, 2025 at New Zion Baptist Church, 1501 Louis Coleman Jr. Drive. Visitation will be 5-8 pm on Monday also at the church. Interment will be in Walnut Ridge Cemetery.
A proud U.S. Navy veteran, Greg carried his sense of duty and discipline into every chapter of his life. He was a natural jokester whose humor and warmth lit up every room. Whether on the field, behind the plate, or in the stands, he was a fixture in youth sports-umpiring little league baseball, refereeing high school football and baseball, and coaching multiple levels of both sports for Greater Clark County Schools. His impact on generations of young athletes is immeasurable.
Greg was also a passionate fan of University of Louisville athletics. Whether cheering on the Cardinals from the stands or from his favorite chair at home, he wore his red and black with pride. His enthusiasm was infectious-game days were sacred, and his spirited commentary was legendary among family and friends.
He worked at American Commercial Barge Lines and later retired from Meijer, where he was known for his strong work ethic and easy camaraderie. He was a faithful member of New Zion Baptist Church, where his presence was felt and appreciated.
He was preceded in death by his mother Farrie B. Flannagan, stepfather Willie Lynch Sr., brother Carl E. Taylor Jr., son Aaron Chase Taylor, and granddaughter Syarah Monet Taylor.
Greg leaves behind his adoring wife and best friend of 52 years, Linda Taylor; children Christopher (Regina) Taylor, Gregory (Amber) Taylor Jr., Sharanda Taylor, Bryan (Melinda) Taylor I., and Brandon Taylor; brothers Cleavon Taylor, Willie (Denita) Lynch Jr.; sisters Juanita Bradley and Doris Ann Haley; 23 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Patricia Jones, Karen Murrell, Sharon Jones (Neal); brothers-in-law Larry Murrell and Kerry (Janet) Murrell and a host of cousins, nephews, nieces and friends. His legacy lives on in the love and laughter of his family and the many lives he touched.
Greg will be remembered not only for his dedication and leadership, but for the joy he brought to others-through his jokes, his coaching, and his unwavering presence. His spirit will continue to guide and inspire all who knew him.
