Gretchen Hunter Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Noble & Kelsey Funeral Home, Inc. - Salisbury on Dec. 12, 2024.
Ms. Gretchen Ann Hunter, a remarkable woman of strength and grace, departed this life on Saturday, November 30, 2024, at 72, in the comfort of her residence. Born on June 9, 1952, in Rowan County, she was the cherished daughter of the late Otha Napoleon Hunter and Linne Lee Cowan.
Gretchen was a proud 1970 graduate of Boyden High School and later furthered her education at Rowan Cabarrus Community College. Known for her unwavering dedication and forthright nature, she spent her career ensuring others' safety as a detention officer at Stonewall Jackson Training School in Concord, retiring with a legacy of integrity and commitment. Beyond her professional achievements, she touched countless lives in her roles at Waffle House and Dunkin' Donuts, where her infectious smile and candid conversations made her a beloved figure in the community.
Family was the cornerstone of Gretchen's life. Fiercely loyal and deeply devoted, she embraced her role as a matriarch with pride and purpose. Her honesty and straightforwardness were matched only by her boundless love and unshakable support for those she held dear. Her home was a haven of warmth and wisdom, a place where laughter and lessons intertwined seamlessly.
In addition to her parents, Gretchen was preceded in death by her grandson, Jacquez D'Andre Hunter-Cathey, whose memory she carried in her heart.
She leaves behind a legacy of love and resilience through her daughters, Sonja Hunter of Charlotte and Bridgette D. Hunter of Georgia; her siblings, Freddie Hunter (Delphine) of Fredericksburg, VA, Thomas Hunter (Carlotta) of Hempstead, Linda Hunter, and Cora Tisha Bolden, both of Salisbury; six grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren who brought endless joy to her life; a special niece, Trina Phillips West; a special nephew, Anthony Lawrence Hunter; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and devoted friends who were touched by her wisdom, humor, and unwavering loyalty.
Ms. Gretchen Ann Hunter's life was a testament to the power of authenticity and the beauty of living with purpose. She will forever be remembered as a strong Black woman who embraced life with honesty, dedication, and an unyielding commitment to those she loved. Her legacy will continue to inspire all who knew her.
