Guna A. Asons, 91, of Fishers, passed away February 11, 2026. Guna was born in Matisi, Latvia. Her family fled the Soviet occupation of Latvia in 1944, lived in a displaced persons’ camp in Germany, and arrived in the USA in 1949. In 1956 Guna married Ernests Asons. She worked at Western Electric in accounts payable, retiring after nearly 25 years of service.
One of Guna’s passions during retirement was teaching children at the Indianapolis Latvian Saturday School and teens at the Latvian Center Garezers Summer High School in Three Rivers, MI. She was a beloved teacher who gave students a strong foundation in the Latvian language and grammar.
Guna was active in the Latvian community of Indianapolis all her life. She had a deep love for her homeland, Latvia, and a lifelong interest in Latvian song, dance, literature, theater, and politics. She was one of the founding members of the Indianapolis Latvian folk dance group Jautrais paris in 1950 and years later directed this group and the senior dance group Jautrais solis. She sang in the Indiana Latvian Society’s mixed choir from its founding in 1951. She served as a board member of the Latvian Community Center and the Latvian Folk Dance Association. Guna enjoyed traveling to Latvia in the 1990s and participating in several Song and Dance Festivals there. At the Indianapolis International Festival she helped with ideas and setup of Latvia’s cultural exhibit booth for several years. Her husband Ernests passed away in 2018.
Guna was a member of the Latvian Lutheran Church, Latvian Community Center, and Latvian Retirees’ Association.
Guna is survived by her daughters, Iveta Asons and Irisa (husband, Edvins) Roze; grandchildren, Martis and Krista Roze; goddaughter, Laura Ramanis, and relatives in Latvia.
