Canton - Guy Lewin Cook, age 94, transitioned from his physical body on Thursday, April 20, 2023.
A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was born on December 14, 1928 to the late Perry and Alcie Cook. Guy was born and lived in Henson Cove in Canton for 93 years.
Guy was well-known for his talent and devotion to constructing beautiful homes. His carpentry skills, work ethic, and honesty made him a craftsman in high demand. He happily worked in construction until the age of 85.
His easy-going and calm personality made Guy an easy man to spend time with and his dry wit was always a welcomed surprise. Guy was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His family never doubted his love, loyalty, and friendship. He loved to work, play Frisbee, and cook hotdogs on the grill with his family. Guy was blessed with strength and agility, and in his youth loved roller skating and riding his Harley Davidson. He loved the mountains, these country roads, and sitting on his front porch. He was a social man with many friends. A man of few words but a man who made you want to listen. 94 years of stories to tell from a place he had always been, at home. Guy had a deeply gracious heart and mind, a strong will, and youthful endurance. Guy had a spirit to be admired. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
Guy honorably served his country during the Korean War from July 1952 to June 1954. His rank was sergeant with assignments that included heavy artillery gunman, sharpshooter, and artillery ski instructor. He was decorated with a Bronze Service Star, United Nations Service Medal, and a National Defense Service Medal.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Gerri Conard Cook; his daughter, Melita Cook Sorrells; granddaughter, Tamsen Powers Burleson; one brother, Earl Cook; and 4 sisters, Ruby Gibson, Edith Cook, Martha Mease, and Marie Steppleton.
Surviving are three children, Vicki Cook Powers and her husband Tom, Guy Dean Cook and his wife Karen, and Sherri Cook Burch; three grandchildren, Caleb Burch, Tori Powers Hughes, and Tessa Powers Hull, and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be held for Mr. Cook at 3:00 pm Sunday, April 30, in the chapel of Crawford / Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service. Pastor Patrick Davis will be officiating. The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
