Guy Griffin Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Penland Family Funeral Home Inc on Feb. 13, 2026.
Guy Griffin, of Salisbury, NC, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2026, in Asheville, NC, at the age of 68. Guy was born on April 25, 1957, in Henderson, NV to the late Frances "Chris" Griffin and Robert "Bob" Griffin. Guy is survived by his son, Caleb J. Griffin of Asheville, NC; Caleb's mother and Guy's former wife, Patti Holcomb-Griffin of Swannanoa, NC; sister Ann Parlato and husband Joseph of Toney, AL; brother Lee Griffin and wife Judy of Durham, NC; and his late stepbrother Bill Griffin and wife Ursel of Kitzingen, Germany.

Guy attended Jordan High School in Durham, NC, where he proudly drove the school bus for two years. He enjoyed driving for the students and was a much-loved school bus driver. After graduating from high school, Guy enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he rose to the rank of Sergeant (E-5). Guy was trained and worked in the power generator equipment repair and wheel vehicle mechanic repair work divisions. Guy made many good friends while in the military, and enjoyed talking about the fun times he had while off-duty, especially when stationed in Colorado Springs, CO. Jumping off tall, rugged cliffs into the frigid, cold river and jumping around to loud metal music in the barracks late at night, are just a few of the exciting times Guy liked to reminisce about.

After an honorable discharge, Guy enlisted in the National Guard where he serviced military aircraft, including the Black Hawk and Apache helicopter. It was during this time that he attended Durham Technical Community College, where he graduated with Professional Certificates in 'Small Engine Repair' and 'HVAC Technician', as well as an NC Real Estate License.

Guy was employed with PSC Wood, Inc., the furniture industry's leading cut-to-size supplier and fabricator of Engineered Wood Panels, located in Mocksville, NC. Guy was a dedicated employee

who took pride in his work and accomplishments. He held the position of Senior CNC Machine Operator, which required exact precision, accuracy, and attention to detail to safely set up and operate the machinery. The family would like to extend a special gratitude of thanks to Janice Dawson, Manager of Human Resources, for all her assistance, support and kindness during Guy's extended illness and absence from his job.

In addition to commercial woodworking, Guy was a skilled carpenter who enjoyed building and finishing furniture. One of his proudest pieces of work was a large treehouse that he built for his son Caleb. The treehouse was built and supported between three trees, high off the ground, with an attached ladder for safe entry. Indeed, Guy was a man of many trades in that he could easily design, build and troubleshoot most anything, wooden, mechanical or electrical. He enjoyed the challenge of coming up with creative and often unusual ways to make things work (that raally arnn't supposed to work), and repairing items that many people would consider impossible to repair. Guy had an art for bringing back life to items worn down and broken.

Guy truly enjoyed the simple pleasures of life such as indulging in decadent sweets, especially rich, dark chocolate; listening to good music, such as classic rock with a screaming guitar, on a very, very good sound system; camping and cooking meals over the open fire, including his signature 'Boy Scout Burger'; spending family vacations on beautiful Caribbean islands (Aruba and Barbados), and the Atlantic coast (Holden Beach and The Outer Banks); and watching the natural wonders of the western landscape, such as the mist slowly rising up in the Grand Canyon at sunrise, and the sun slowly sinking in the quiet, barren desert at sunset. But of all these, his favorite pleasure in life was spending time with friends and family, especially with his son Caleb. Guy was a kind and devoted father who loved his son above all else.

Guy was also a man of integrity, and an honest and trustworthy friend to many. The family would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude and sincere appreciation to two of Guy's closest friends, his army buddy Mike Martin, from Mission Viejo, CA, and Mike Slusarz, his best buddy from Salisbury, NC. Thank you for your steadfast support, genuine words of encouragement, strong helping hands and always being present for us (and Guy) during his illness.

A Celebration of Life will be held on March 26, 2026, at 12:00 pm in the chapel on the grounds of the Western Carolina Veterans Cemetery, located at 962 Old US Hwy 70 W, Black Mountain, NC 28711.
