DELMAR - Dr. Guy C. McCoy, of Delmar, New York, passed away at age 81, after a heroic two-year battle with cancer. On Monday, 8 July 2024, he died at home, his beloved wife of 57 years, Maja, at his side.
Dr. McCoy was born in 1942 to Gauin and Vivienne (Carlson) McCoy. After education in the Port Allegany schools, he graduated from Yale University in 1964, with a degree in Molecular Biology and Biophysics. He earned his medical degree from Albany Medical College of Union University, Albany, New York, in 1968, followed by an internship at the Cleveland Clinic. He joined the Army Medical Corps and was stationed at the 2nd Field Hospital, Bremerhaven, Germany, as the Preventative Medicine Officer, for three years. After his discharge, at the rank of Major, and having earned the Army Commendation Medal for his service, he returned to the Cleveland Clinic for residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Hypertension and Nephrology. He spent an additional year as a research fellow at the Cleveland Clinic Research Institute. In 1976, he returned to Albany, to the Division of Nephrology at Albany Medical College, where he established a referral practice for Hypertension and Nephrology. Dr. McCoy collaborated with experts at the SUNY Albany Department of Psychology, and the University of Moscow, on research into biobehavioral treatments for hypertension. In 1988, Dr. McCoy left academic medicine and was one of the founding members of Capital District Renal Physicians, later serving as Managing Partner and President. During his career, he was a member of the American Heart Association New York Affiliate's Hypertension Committee and an expert consultant to the New York State Office of Professional Medical Conduct. He retired from clinical practice in 2003.
Dr. McCoy was an amateur radio operator for 20 years, an avid reader on almost any topic, and a skilled rough and finish carpenter, having successfully constructed several additions to his camp in the Adirondacks. He enjoyed playing the classical guitar and traveling to visit his wife's family in Sweden where he became fluent in Swedish. Other hobbies included camping, fly fishing, kayaking, and writing humorous stories about his travels to share with family.
He will be remembered for his strong faith, deep love of his family, vast generosity, creative problem-solving, unwavering curiosity, superb teaching abilities, and joyful sense of humor.
He was predeceased by his parents and both sisters and their spouses, Bettie (James) Kelley, and Ann (Charles) Gross. He is survived by his wife, Maja; their children, Karin (Joseph Barker) McCoy, Kristina (Brian) Blankinship, and Carl (Sarah) McCoy; his brother-in-law, Thomas (Marianne) Svenningsson; nine nieces and nephews, and their children. His family loved him wholeheartedly and will miss him dearly.
Visiting hours will be on Friday, 19 July, from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m., at Meyers Funeral Home in Delmar, N.Y. Funeral Services will be on Saturday, 20 July, at 11:00 a.m., at the Episcopal Cathedral of All Saints, 62 South Swan Street, Albany, N.Y. A private burial will be held on 22 July, in Delmar, N.Y.
