Guy Standing Obituary

Guy Lynn Standing

1953 - 2025

Guy Lynn Standing was born December 27, 1953, in Murray, Utah. He passed away August 23, 2025, in Salt Lake City, Utah, after battling cancer for 10 months.

Guy was the life of any party! How could you not be with the name "Guy Standing?" We could count on him having a new joke, or an old joke (we all know Pancho Villa - iykyk). He grew up in Sugarhouse graduating from Highland High School, enjoying drama and a cappella choir. After graduation he served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Colorado Denver mission. There he found that his positive outlook for life and love of people enriched his entire life. He loved being a missionary and continued his service as a disciple of Jesus Christ. Among his many church callings, he particularly enjoyed serving as Ward Mission Leader and as a counselor in the Bishopric.

After returning from his missionary experience, he moved to Southern California for work and to find new opportunities. There, along with his wife, he raised two children, Melissa Lyn (Ball) and Derek Michael. He adored his children, with that sparkle only a father can have. Guy loved the culture and weather of Southern California. He enjoyed designing and personally building their home in Altadena.

Life changes later took him back to Utah, where he reinvented himself. Guy was an entrepreneur, always creating, whether it was a business venture or artwork. He had a passion for anything rusty and metal. He loved hunting through junk yards for that special piece to create a visual delight. His attention to detail was impressive. He had a gift for creating.

His hobbies included creating unique works of art, collecting and shooting guns, creating antler knives with leather sheaths, endlessly enjoying good music, and sipping a Diet Pepsi Zero. He believed that ground beef was the most perfect food.

Guy was a natural salesman. He was handsome and a sharp dresser. His physical appearance coupled with a sincere desire to help people enabled him to be successful in a lifelong career in sales. It surprised even him that in his later years he enjoyed working for Larkin Mortuary. Once again, his love for people and compassion for them was shown through his personality.

He is survived by his wife and sweetheart Jill Brimhall Standing. Their love story wasn't long enough. The writer of this obituary would like to thank her for making the last months of his life wonderful. He felt loved and complete.

He is also survived by his children: daughter Melissa (Neal) Ball, son Derek Standing, mother Gwen Standing, sister Denise Sweigard, half sister Janeen (Franklin) Steer, half brothers David Standing and Thomas Standing, bonus daughters Kirstie (Jeff) Lovell, Mandy (Ken) Cooper and cousin/sister Kimberly (Ross) Hamilton, special aunt Marged A. Kirkpatrick. Grandchildren: Spencer Ball, Bryson Standing, Amanda Standing, Samantha Standing.

Henry (Ashley) Lovell, Sydni (Jameson) Midgley, Lucy (Davin) Whitaker, Owen Cooper, Franklin Lovell, Calvin Williams, Lydia Lovell, Jack Cooper, Charlie Williams.

Preceded in death by his Grandparents Charles A. and Ella G. French, half sister Maria Standing, special Uncle Michael K. and Aunt Jacquelin F. Kirkpatrick, Cousin Kevin L. Kirkpatrick, bonus Aaron Nelson Williams and Timothy Dale Williams.

A viewing will be held Friday September 5, 2025, from 6:00pm – 8:00pm at the Riverbend Ward Meetinghouse, 220 East 8670 South, Sandy. Funeral Services will be held at the same location on Saturday September 6, 2025, at 11:00am with a viewing before: 10:00am – 10:45am.

It was so fun to reconnect with Guy at our 50th reunion, I knew him instantly because he was still very handsome, very vibrant and kind.
I admired his talents in high school and I´m glad that he was able to develop and share those throughout his life. He fought the good fight on more than one front. Sing with the angels, Guy!

Guy was the nicest person in the world. He was my polka partner in the 6th grade for our outdoor dance festival. Always dressed so awesome.
You will be missed my childhood friend.
Condolences to Guys family.
Until we meet again.

I looked forward to every class I had with Guy. He kept me in stitches and often got us in trouble for laughing. Everybody loved Guy Standing.
