It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Gwendolyn (Gwen) Laye Freeman, age 82, who died peacefully in her home on December 12, 2024 with her family and beloved fluffy puppy Izzy by her side. Gwendolyn was born on December 6, 1942, in Gaston County, NC, to the late Rev. LB Laye Sr. and Laura Laye.
She was married to William Ralph Freeman Jr. for 61 years, sharing a lifetime of love, devotion, and cherished memories. Ralph survives her, along with their son, Bill Freeman (Carla) of Edneyville NC, their daughter, Laura Myers (Jim) of Winder GA, and their two beloved grandsons, Matthew Myers and Ethan Freeman, brother LB (Skip) Laye Jr. of Orange Park FL, and several nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Janis Bell.
Gwen graduated from Chase High School in 1960 and Brevard College in 1962. After moving to Hendersonville NC in the early 1980's Gwen worked as a paralegal for the Mullinax Law Firm for over 30 years, where she became known as the "Queen of the Record Room," a title her family fondly remembers. Her meticulous work and dedication were unmatched. In her personal life, she was known for her love of puzzles, particularly the New York Times crossword, which she completed in ink, a testament to her sharp mind and determination. She and Ralph spent years enjoying camping and spending time with friends at Buck Hill Campground in the mountains of Western North Carolina. And those days brought fond memories and many stories. After their move to Grayson GA in 2017, she and Ralph enjoyed volunteering at the Southeast Gwinnett Cooperative Ministry and made many friends. Her favorite part was enjoying the children who came in and picked out birthday cakes for family celebrations.
Known for her warmth, kindness, and generous spirit, Gwen touched the lives of all who knew her. Her family was her greatest treasure, and she was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, always putting others before herself.
A memorial service to celebrate Gwen's wife will be held at 3 PM Saturday, May 3, 2025 in the chapel of Shuler Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Oakdale Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to The CART Fund (Coins for Alzheimer's Research Trust) 1053 Maryland Ave, Spartanburg SC 29307 or online at www.mycartfund.org or Southeast Gwinnett Cooperative Ministry PO Box 1521, Snellville GA 30078 or online at https://segwinnettcoop.org/donate in her memory.
