Hacker D. Combs, a cherished family man and respected machinist, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 2, 2026, in
South Bend, Indiana, at the age of 89. Born on August 2, 1936, in Beech, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Bonie and Mahalie (Deaton) Combs. Hacker's life was one marked by dedication, skill, and a warm, engaging personality that made him a memorable figure in the lives of all who knew him.
Hacker's early years in Kentucky laid the foundation for a life of hard work and commitment. After attending High School, he served his country with distinction in the United States Army Corps of Engineers, an experience that instilled in him a sense of discipline that he carried throughout his life. In 1965, Hacker moved from Covington, Kentucky, to the South Bend area, where he would establish his home and leave a lasting impact on the community.
For 45 years, Hacker applied his talents as a machinist at Wheelabrator and Dodge Manufacturing Company, earning the respect of his colleagues for his precision and reliability. His hands were not only skilled but also incredibly handy, a trait that made him the go-to person for fixing anything that needed repair. His retirement in 1998 was celebrated by all who had the pleasure of working alongside him.
Hacker's life was enriched by his beloved family. He was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Elvora (Trent) Combs, who passed away on February 6, 2020. The love and memories they shared continue to be a source of comfort and inspiration to their surviving daughter, Gloria Owens of Fiskburg, KY, and two sons, David (Sandra) Combs and Jerry Combs, both of Mishawaka, IN. Hacker's legacy also lives on through his four adoring grandchildren, who will miss their grandfather's interesting stories and wise counsel.
He is also survived by his two brothers, Archie (Jean) Combs and Robert Combs, who, along with the rest of the family, will fondly remember him. Hacker was predeceased by his brothers, William Combs, Harlin Combs, Jacie Combs, Jimmy Combs and John Dair, and their shared memories will continue to be honored by the family.
Hacker's life was a testament to the values of hard work, family, and service. His interesting anecdotes and ability to fix anything made him a beloved figure within his family. His passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him, but the imprint of his spirit remains indelible.
Cremation will take place, and Hacker's ashes will be interred at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Osceola, IN. Palmer Funeral Home-River Park Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
