Hanley Johnson, 91 formerly of New Sharon, passed away Thursday, January 8, 2026 at the Rolling Green Village Care Center in Nevada, Iowa. As was his wish, his body has been cremated and will be buried in the Union Mills Cemetery at Union Mills at a later date. Holland-Coble Funeral Home of New Sharon is in charge of arrangements.

Hanley L. Johnson, the son of Clovis and Josie (Groves) Johnson was born on November 11, 1934. He graduated from Kellogg High School with the class of 1953. Hanley served in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany. He extended his stay in order to travel and sightsee in Europe. Hanley did clerical work and data processing in Los Angeles, Washington D.C. and Toledo, Ohio before retiring from Grinnell Reinsurance in 2000. He loved history, art and traveling. Hanley was a proud collector of antiques, particularly glassware. He also enjoyed gardening, creating beautiful flower beds and caring for his horse, goats, chickens, geese, guinea hens, and cats on his acreage. Along with his passion for these hobbies, Hanley will be remembered for his strong independence, quick wit, and sense of humor. He was a member of the Friends of PBS, the Smithsonian Historical Society and the Kellogg Historical Society.

Hanley is survived by his sister, Dixie (late Gene) VerSteeg of Nashville, Indiana; his brother, Oscar (Betty) Johnson of Bentonville, Arkansas, and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Phyllis Story, Ava Jean Stone, Ilean Whitehead, and one in infancy, Cleda Yvonne Johnson along with two brothers, Duane Johnson and Perry Johnson.
