Hans Boehm Obituary
Rhinebeck - Hans G. Boehm, 96, died November 21, 2023. He was born in Vienna, Austria in 1927.
After serving in World War II, he earned his engineering degree at the Technical University in Austria. As a Fulbright Scholar, he then earned his Master's degree through the University of Florida in Gainesville.
In 1951, he made his way to the United States on a visa from Austria to work at the Bell Telephone Labs in New York City. There he met his future wife, Mary, whom he married in 1956. Three years later, the family moved to Poughkeepsie, New York, where Hans changed his field from telephone design to computer development with IBM.
The family moved to Rhinebeck, New York in 1965 to be near the Kingston IBM facility. Their four children attended Rhinebeck public schools and Hans served on the school board for eight years, five as president. It was the first of his many volunteer services to the community.
Upon retirement, he was employed by the Census Bureau, served as treasurer for the Library Board and the Quitman Resource Center, and spent over 20 years volunteering for Meal-on-Wheels and stewarding Burger Hill.
Hans loved his backyard birds and kept them well-fed. He even made peace with the squirrels.
He is survived by his wife and four children: Susan Smith (Eric); Hans Martin Boehm (Cathleen); Mary Ann Dougherty (Marsh); Elizabeth Boehm (Paul Rudeen); and six grandchildren. They have been his pride and joy. He will be dearly missed by his wife Mary of 67 years and his family and friends.
