Harlan Salvatori Obituary

Harlan 'Curly' Salvatori

Sioux City

Harlan "Curly" Salvatori, 91, of Sioux City passed away Thursday, Dec. 22, 2022.

Services will be at 10 a.m. on Friday at Mater Dei Parish Immaculate Conception Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday with vigil service at 7 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. Online condolences may be directed to meyerbroschapels.com.

Harlan was born the son of Edward and Ruth (Rauch) Salvatori on Feb. 20, 1931, in Avon, S.D. His family moved shortly after where he attended Sioux City schools and graduated from Trinity High School in 1948. He worked for Metz Baking a few years before starting his lifelong devotion to the plumbing industry. Harlan worked for Hagen Plumbing, Foulk Brothers and contract work through the union before retiring in 1996. He continued to stay active doing his plumbing through word of mouth until he was 85 years old.

Harlan was most proud and honored when he was recognized this past October by the Plumbers and Steamfitters Local Union 33 and Western Iowa Labor Federation for 70 years of membership and solidarity in the United Association Local 33. He continued to stay active up until his death attending union meetings, building trade meetings, plumber and electrician breakfasts.

Harlan will be fondly remembered as a very social, outgoing person. He loved to talk and enjoyed having coffee with the guys. He was also very passionate about his volunteer work with the Community Action Agency of Siouxland where he was a current board member and served various board positions since 2004. He also holds a special place in his heart for his "Sisters" at the Carmelite Nuns Monastery where he volunteered his plumbing for over 50 years.

Harlan is survived by his daughter, Mary Ann Johnson of West Des Moines, Iowa; grandchildren, Jessica Conolly of Fort Collins, Colo., and Tyler Handke of Sioux City; special friends, Lois Daniels, Jean and Mike Logan and their daughters; and all of his buddies and union members from the brotherhood.

He was preceded in death by his parents; long-time companion, Patricia Eli; brother, Donald; and sister, Maryann.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be directed to the Community Action Agency of Siouxland.

My sincere condolences on the loss of your father and grandfather. Curly was a first cousin to my mother, Theresa Salvatori Stratman. Curly's dad was a brother to my grandfather, Charles Salvatori. Curly used to come and visit my grandmother, Theresa Salvatori and my mother from time to time on his way through Yankton, SD. He was a special man. I will miss him.
