Harold Howar Obituary

Published by Legacy on Aug. 5, 2025.
Harold Daniel Howar, also known as "Dan" or "Pops," passed away peacefully at home on July 31, 2025, surrounded by family after a months-long, courageous battle with pulmonary cancer.

Dan was born on August 16, 1957, in Meyersdale, Pennsylvania, to Mary S. Howar and Harold Z. Howar. He spent his childhood in Meyersdale, where he developed the curiosity and warm-hearted nature that would define his life. He pursued higher education at the University of Indiana Pennsylvania, Frostburg State University, and the University of Pittsburgh, where he studied economics.

Dan dedicated 32 years of his life as an economist with the Internal Revenue Service. His sharp intellect, steady work ethic, and commitment to hard work left a lasting impression on those around him both professionally and personally. He always led with a quiet generosity-whether offering a helping hand, a kind word, or simply picking up the tab, Dan's integrity and thoughtfulness touched his family, friends, and community in countless, unspoken ways.

On September 27, 1992, Dan married the love of his life, Maria L. Howar (66). Together, they shared a life rich with love, laughter, and deep conversation. He was a devoted father to Harold H. Howar (32) and Benjamin L. Howar (30) and took immense joy and love in being "Grandpops" to his grandsons, Sebastian M. Howar (4) and Julian L. Howar (1). Dan is also survived by his two brothers, David and Dennis Howar, and was preceded in death by his parents, Mary S. Howar and Harold Z. Howar, who no doubt welcomed him home with open arms.

Dan lived life fully. He especially loved golfing and cycling and was a regular at the gym. He appreciated the finer things in life: a strong cup of coffee, a good beer, a smooth whiskey, and live music. The Grateful Dead played often in the background throughout his life, and he never missed a chance to cheer on the Pittsburgh Steelers or follow Pitt and WVU sports.

More than anything, Dan was someone you could talk to about anything. Whether over a beer on the back porch or while watching the game, he was easygoing, warm, and insightful. He found joy in everyday moments and built deep connections with family and friends through his love of sports, music, and conversation.

A Celebration of Life will be held at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Shepherdstown, WV, on Saturday, August 9, at 11:00 AM.

The Howar family extends a heartfelt thanks to Hospice of the Panhandle for their compassionate care, and most importantly to the amazing, generous, thoughtful, friendly family and community members for extending a helping hand during those difficult moments.

"Like a ripple in still water, your memory will spread and touch countless souls. Fare thee well, brother Dan." – Grateful Dead
