Harold ‘Skip’ Hahn passed away January 23, 2026, at the age of 81, leaving behind a legacy of love and laughter. Skip proudly raised two stepchildren, Greg Zimmerman (Ann) and Stacey Zimmerman, with former partner Phyllis, and was the very proud grandpa of Rachel and Benjamin Zimmerman. Son of Harold and Joyce Hahn, and brother to Ronald (d. 2007) (wife Bonnie d. 2026), Pam (Roger) Heiser, and Rick (Pat), family meant everything to him. He adored his countless nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. A special thank you to niece Stacey Hermes for her dedication to Skip.

Skip served in the US Army Reserve, while working as a grocery chain manager with Jewel Foods. He volunteered as Youth Director and Sunday School Director at Trinity UCC Church in Deerfield, where he helped make wonderful memories for the children and teens. Skip’s passions led to his career choices—fixing engines (especially MGs), while partnering with his best friend, Gary, at Ye Olde Tunesmith for many years. Working as a DJ and later as airborne traffic reporter on WBBM Chicago radio and flying small planes—with the distinction of having his flight log signed by the Captain of the Goodyear Blimp after his time piloting it. How many people in the world can say that?! He mastered the art of working at what you loved.

Skip owned MG’s and entered car shows and drove his MGs in good weather. He also loved boating and owned a boat for many years, first renting a slip at Winthrop Harbor on Lake Michigan and then at Lake Lawn in Wisconsin. He spent many weekends enjoying the boat and boating. He was known to take his grandchildren boating and fishing upon occasion as well. Oh the stories!

We are grateful to Deer Park Village for their care and service to Skip. We also are thankful to Gentiva Hospice workers for their kind and compassionate care of Skip and family during his last months.

If you want to honor Skip, do something to make a child smile. Memorial donations would be appreciated to People Helping People-Palatine.
