Harold L. Smith, 88, Retired Brigadier General, of Williamstown, passed away Friday, August 29, 2025 at his home.

Harold was born in Williamstown, Saturday, May 29, 1937, a son of the late James and Lottie Reed Smith. He was a 1955 graduate of Williamstown High School, and he also received a Bachelor of Science degree from the Regents College of the University of New York in 1992.

Harold enlisted in the Army National Guard, July 1, 1955 at Fort Indiantown Gap, a career that expanded over 37 years. On December 22, 1986, he was awarded the United States of America Meritorious Service Medal, an honor of which he was extremely proud. On December 12, 1988, he earned the rank of Colonel. His final and highest appointment was on June 1, 1992, when he received the rank of retired Brigadier General. Harold will be remembered as a true patriot who loved his country and was well respected by many.

He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, the Williamstown American Legion, and the Liberty Hose Company #1, Williamstown. Harold enjoyed the simple things in life, such as doing puzzles, cheering on the Phillies and Eagles, having breakfast at the Legion, and making trips to Kenny Stehr & Sons Farm in Pitman. Above all else, his family was his pride and joy. He will be remembered as the grandfather who always went above and beyond.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Emma Jane Leuschner Smith, May 21, 2024; a son, Douglas Smith; a brother, James Smith; a sister, Anna Marie Schylaske.

Surviving are his son, David Smith and his wife Jode, Williamstown; two grandchildren, Dylan Smith and his wife Ashley, and Leah Murphy and her husband Nate. He is also survived by Morgan Klinger (Dale Williams), whom Harold thought of as a granddaughter; a great granddaughter, Zoey Jane Smith; several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held on Thursday, September 4, 2025 at 11:00 AM from the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Williamstown with Mr. John Paul officiating. Visitation will be from 10-11 at the church. Harold will be laid to rest with full military honors at 1:00 PM in the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. A luncheon and time of fellowship will follow at the Williamstown Fire Company Social Hall.
