Harold Troutner Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Palmer Funeral Homes in the Palmer Community Complex - Lakeville Chapel on Jul. 26, 2025.
Harold Franklin Troutner passed away peacefully on July 25, 2025 at the age of 92.

He was born on March 20, 1933 in Marian, Michigan, to Mahlon and Emma Irene (Myers) Troutner. Harold proudly served his country in the Korean War with the United State Army.

Harold was married to Helen Sorocco for 35 years until her passing. On September 9, 1989, he married Margaret (Whiteman Kammerer), and together they shared nearly 36 wonderful years.

Harold spent 29 years serving as a St. Joseph County police officer. He was proud to become the department's first officer to work with a K partner, a loyal dog named Kim. He was also a member of Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #155, staying connected to the law enforcement community he loved.

Harold had many passions throughout his life. He loved riding motorcycles, enjoyed the camaraderie of the Corvette Club, and spent hours flying remote controlled airplanes. Later on, he kept that love of aviation alive by enjoying realistic flight simulators at home. He also had a knack for woodworking, loved tinkering with things and listening to country music.

One of his happiest places was his stepdaughter's lake-he always called it "a little piece of heaven"-where he and Margaret enjoyed many happy days with family and friends. He found joy in the little things too, like watching and feeding the birds, eating waffles or some Popeyes chicken, and always keeping a stash of Tootsie Rolls close by his chair.

Harold is survived by his beloved wife, Margaret; his stepdaughter Julia (Tim) Whitmer; his stepsons, Kevin (Joyce) Kammerer and William (Carmon) Kammerer Jr.; many step grandchildren and step great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also remembered by his close childhood friend Rex Edwards, who fondly called him "Babe."

Harold was preceded in death by his brother Bobby, his parents, and his first wife Helen.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 29, 2025 at the Palmer Funeral Home, within the Palmer Community Complex, 601 N. Michigan Street, Lakeville. Military graveside services and burial will follow at Highland Cemetery, South Bend. Friends may visit with the family from 3:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Friends may also visit with the family beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday.

Harold will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. The Family thanks Heart to Heart Hospice for all their special care.
