Harold VanDermark Obituary
Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sheenan Funeral Home - Dunellen on Oct. 3, 2025.
Harold "Hal" VanDermark, devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to many, passed away surrounded by his loved ones. His warmth, humor, and unwavering love for family and community will be cherished and remembered always.
Born in Jersey City, New Jersey, and raised in Edison, he was the son of the late Harold, Sr. and Joan (Lenahan) VanDermark. Hal went on to serve proudly in the U.S. Navy before eventually settling in Dunellen in 1987-a town he quickly came to call home. His younger years were filled with adventure and laughter, from competing in demolition derbies with his beloved "Ghetto Cruiser" to playing and coaching hockey, a sport he loved dearly. Hal was a proud member of a local men's hockey league, where he never missed a chance to remind everyone of his championship wins.
Hal's love of sports carried through to his family life, where he coached his children in various sports and inspired countless young athletes with his encouragement, patience, and sense of humor.
A man of creativity and community, Hal followed his passion for art by opening his own gallery in the heart of Dunellen. His artistic eye and kind spirit made his gallery a welcoming space for all. In 2021, he continued his dedication to his beloved town when he was appointed councilman-a role he embraced with pride, integrity, and genuine care for his neighbors.
Hal was the loving husband of 46 years to his wife and best friend, Elizabeth. Together they built a beautiful life centered on love, laughter, and family. He was a proud father to Joan and her husband Kris, and Hal and his wife Nicki. He was a doting "Pop Pop" to his six grandchildren-Cory, Olivia, Ava, Callie, Luke, and Caitlin-each of whom brought immense joy to his life. He was brother to Scott, and Thomas VanDermark, Judith King, Michael Blodgett, and John Woods.
Hal will be remembered for his stubborn streak, his quick wit, and his ability to make anyone feel like an old friend. His presence filled every room, his laughter lifted every heart, and his love anchored his family through all of life's moments.
His spirit will live on in the family he adored, the art he created, and the town he helped shape. Though his humor and stories will be deeply missed, his legacy of love and laughter will remain forever.
In addition to his parents, Hal was preceded in death by his 2 sisters: Cheryl Vivian, and Joan Baker. His stepmother's: Virginia VanDermark, and Helen VanDermark, and stepsister Starlene.
Relatives and friends are invited to Hal's viewing on Thursday, October 9, 2025, at Sheenan Funeral Home, 233 Dunellen Avenue, Dunellen from 4:00 PM and to his funeral service at 7:00 PM. Interment will be private.
