Mrs. Harriet Berthelsen passed away on April 25, 2025 at the age of 93.
Harriet was born in August 1931 to Arthur and Alta Haschke of Stanford Montana. Growing up as an only child, in a rural town, she decided early on that she wanted many children.
Harriet's family moved to Southern California when Harriet started High School. There she met and married John Mayfield, a handsome young man in uniform post WWII. After their first son Steven was born, husband John was called to active duty overseas in the Korean War. When he was home again Judy was born, followed by Mary, then John Jr. After 24 years, John and Harriet parted ways.
A romance developed with a handsome widower in Harriet's church, and when she married Otto Berthelsen, her immediate family grew from 5 to 11.
Harriet did everything with gusto. She put ketchup on almost everything, and she made delicious pies. She provided many adventures and misadventures for the family to laugh about.
Harriet had a childlike faith and devotion. She was generous to strangers, a wonderful friend, and a blessing to those who knew her.
Harriet was the most sincere person any of us has ever known.
She was preceded in death by Otto Berthelsen (husband), Steven Mayfield (son), Mary Neufeld (daughter), MaryAnn Mayfield (granddaughter), Kaitlyn Oliver (great-granddaughter) and Harold Vinson (son-in-law).
Harriet is survived by her daughter Judy (Harold) Gates, son John (Sheri) Mayfield; son-in-law Donn Neufeld, and stepchildren Doris Vinson, Drs. Steve (Bobetta) Berthelsen, Gail (Howard) Wein, Nina (Dr. Roger) Rudd and Deni (Sam) Stephens.
One of Harriet's most favorite things was being a grandma to her 21 plus grandchildren. She is survived by Steffani, Laura, Kristina E., Karen Kristina, Aaron (Lisa), Rachelle (Kent), Joseph (Marcy), Angela (Bryan), Tim (Sherah), Adrianna (Michael), Ryan (Katie), Juno, Olivia (John), Ashley (Kjeld), Jackie (Alex), Donn (Felice), Jennifer (Henry), Sophia, Travis (Tessa), Aubree, Whitney, Ryan, and more still joining the family.
Harriet has 26 great-grandchildren, 13 great-great-grand children and more on the way.
A Memorial service for Harriet Berthelsen will be held at the Wickenburg SDA church 970 N. Tegner Street, Wickenburg, AZ. 85390, at 1p.m. on May 31,2025. Cremation and family service provided by Wickenburg Funeral Home in Wickenburg Arizona, with internment at Rose Hills California at a later date.
