Harriet B. Ullman

1927 - 2025

Harriet Birnbaum Ullman passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 5, 2025, just one month shy of her 98th birthday, with her beloved daughter, Susan, by her side.

Born in Cobrin, Poland, Harriet immigrated to Savannah at the age of 10, not knowing a word of English. She went on to become a cherished member of the community, known for her extraordinary talent as a cook and her successful catering business, which she ran for over 40 years. Harriet was especially renowned-some would say world-famous-for her apple strudel. To all who knew her, she was simply "Aunt Harriet."

A dedicated volunteer, she gave countless hours to the kitchens of her synagogue and the Jewish Educational Alliance. Her greatest joy, however, came from spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 61 years, Albert J. Ullman, whom she met at a party he famously crashed upon returning from World War II. She was also predeceased by her three sons: Stephan, Allan, and Mark Ullman.

She is survived by her daughter, Susan Slotin and her husband Frank Slotin of Savannah; her son, Jeffry Ullman and his wife Ellen of Boca Raton, Florida; five grandchildren: Zachary Ullman, Sasha Ullman, Samuel Slotin, Matthew and Hannah Lemer; and one great-grandchild, Eli Lemer.

The family extends a sincere heartfelt thanks to all of her caregivers over the years, including Georgia Hospice Care and the dedicated staff at Harmony at Savannah, for their compassion and support.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, June 8, at Bonaventure Cemetery.
