Harriett Irene Franks, age 83, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 28, 2025, in Magnolia, Arkansas. Born on July 24, 1942, in Arkadelphia, Harriett – affectionately known as "Shug" – lived a life marked by dedication to her family, her faith, and her community.
Harriett's journey began in Perryville, where she grew into a person of remarkable character and achievement. Harriett's early life was marked by her involvement in the 4-H club of Waldo High School, which ignited her lifelong passions for baking and sewing. Her talents in these crafts lead her to win the Columbia County Cherry Pie Contest, attending the National Cherry Pie Contest in Chicago, IL. These accomplishments led her to Ouachita Baptist University (OBU), where she was an Honor Graduate receiving a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics. In 1964, Harriett's peers recognized her leadership and contributions by naming her OBU's Outstanding Senior Woman.
After graduation, Harriett embarked on a career that showcased her passion for education and design. She taught first grade in Stillwater, OK, and then home economics at Magnolia Junior High School. Harriett's creative talents and keen eye for beauty eventually led her to a fulfilling career as an interior designer.
Harriett's love story with her surviving husband, Dr. Larry Franks, was one of mutual respect and unwavering support. Together, they raised a family of accomplished sons – Dr. Hayden Franks (Lynne) of Little Rock, Dr. Jason Franks (Tara) of Waldo, and Dr. Justin Franks (Michelle) of Little Rock – who followed in their father's footsteps of service and excellence. Harriett's legacy also lives on through her cherished grandchildren, Emily Franks of Little Rock, Harrison Franks of Little Rock, Claudia Haley (Brett) of Little Rock, Ethan Franks (Jorja and son Miller) of Magnolia, Madison Franks of Little Rock, Micah Franks of Little Rock, and Bailey Franks of Little Rock, all of whom she adored. Harriett's sister, Mary Kolb (Ron) of Waconia, MN, along with a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends, will fondly remember her loving nature and the joy she brought into their lives. Those who preceded her in death are her parents, Jeff and Mary Irene (Aymond) High; grandson, Tucker Elliott Franks; and brother, Jeff Andrew High.
A woman of deep faith, Harriett was a longtime, faithful member of the First United Methodist Church. Her involvement in the church was extensive, participating in the Open Door Sunday school class and serving as a Trustee. Harriett's commitment to her faith was evident in her actions and the grace with which she approached life's challenges.
Outside of her family and church life, she was an active member of the Magnolia Junior Charity League and Chapter AN PEO. She was instrumental in the planning of what is now the Magnolia Regional Medical Center, where she also served on the MRMC Foundation Board. Harriett was proud to have been responsible for obtaining original artwork from resident artists of Columbia County to be displayed in the halls and rooms throughout the hospital.
