Harry Brooks was born on October 7, 1950, in Long Island, New York. He was the fourth oldest of ten children to Glenn Brooks and Donnie Mae Brooks. Harry grew up in Long Island, where he developed a passion for track and field during his time at Bayshore High School, becoming a track star. He also loved working on cars, a hobby that stayed with him throughout his life.

Harry served in the United States Army and was a Vietnam War veteran, an experience that deeply influenced his life and inspired his brother, Donald Brooks, to also join the military. Harry was known as a mentor and an advocate for fellow veterans, dedicating his time to helping others at the Veterans Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, and volunteering at the VA hospital in Charlotte.

Throughout his life, Harry lived in several places, including Harlem, Brooklyn, Las Vegas, Nevada, and Charlotte, North Carolina. No matter where he was, Harry’s joyful spirit and sense of humor left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He was affectionately known as "Belafonte" by his niece, Sharlo Caldwell, whom he lovingly called "Sharoo," and he affectionately called her daughter, Tiara, "T.T."

Harry was the life of every party, a dancer, a jokester, and someone who loved children deeply. His family recalls how, during his mother’s funeral, Harry lightened the mood by performing a split to the tune of James Brown’s "I Feel Good" right in front of her casket, bringing laughter to everyone present. His sister, Diane Caldwell, fondly remembers how Harry would call their mother on FaceTime during family gatherings so she could be part of the event, a testament to his deep love for his family.

Harry was also known for his love of chocolate donuts from Dunkin’ Donuts, a simple pleasure that brought him great joy.

Harry is survived by his wife, Gwendella Pierce Brooks, his children, Harry Jr. and Gwendella Denise Washington (Brooks), affectionately known as "Wo-Wo," and his grandchildren, Albert Lee Littlejohn and Syria Gwendella Brooks. He is also survived by Karolyn Brooks and his siblings Diane Caldwell, Irish Brooks, Michael Brooks, Donald Brooks, Alan Brooks, and his in-laws Peggy Brooks, Ernestine Bryan, and Aubrey Bryan, as well as numerous nieces and nephews from the first, second, and third generations. Messages from loved ones include:

- Alan Brooks lovingly states, "He will always be my hero. Love your baby brother, Alan Brooks."

- Shea Caldwell, who says, "I will always love you, Uncle. Love your nephew, Shea Caldwell."

Harry Brooks will be remembered as a happy-go-lucky person, someone who would give his last dime to anyone in need, and an uplifter who brought joy and light into the lives of those around him. His family and friends will forever cherish the memories of his laughter, generosity, and unwavering love.
