Harry Covington Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Dunkum Funeral Home Inc on Sep. 17, 2024.
Harry Jasper "Jack" Covington, adored husband, father, brother, uncle, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2024, at the age of 78.
Born in Buena Vista on July 4, 1946, to Lois and Harry Covington, Jack was a man of many talents and great passions. He was a proud and decorated Navy sailor, having served with distinction on the USS Boxer and in Vietnam during the Vietnam War. His bravery was recognized with the National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal with one Bronze Star for heroic action in combat.
Jack was married to his devoted wife, Wanda, for 51 years, a testament to their enduring love and partnership. In addition to Wanda, he is survived by his sisters, Doris and Sharon (Rodney), and his children Candas (Mike), Joe (Deborah), Tammy (Todd), Kay (Paul), Shannon (Bobby), and Jackie (Tom). Jack's legacy extends to his 14 adored grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, each of whom he cherished deeply. He also leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Lois and Harry Covington and siblings Lois Lee, Johnny, Joe, Helen, Homer Jr., and Betty.
His diverse career journey, which included roles as a truck driver, drywall contractor, real estate agent, welder, and machinist, exemplified his versatility and relentless spirit. His work with the Department of Corrections capped a lifetime of varied and fulfilling professions, and his example inspired his children to embrace the freedom to change their minds and pursue their interests and goals. He was a true "Jack" of all trades.
A true car enthusiast, Jack delighted in entering car shows with his son, earning numerous awards for his meticulously restored 1964 Galaxie 500 and 1968 Galaxie 500. His love for cars was matched only by his love for coffee, horses, and above all, his family and friends. Jack was a great judge of character, known for his kindness and wisdom.
In honoring his memory, we remember Jack as a man who lived life to the fullest and touched the hearts of many. Jack had a nickname for everyone, each family member and friend will remember the special name he had for them with laughter and love. His legacy of love, dedication, and service will continue to inspire those who knew and loved him.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 22, 2024 between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. at the Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn.
