Harry Dickey Obituary

Harry Dickey

Nashville, TN

Harry Lee Dickey, age 63, passed away on Tuesday, June 16, 2015.

Mr. Dickey was preceded in death by his parents, Allen and Janie Lou Dickey, and three brothers, Doyce, Harold and Robert Earl Dickey.

Harry was a graduate of Aquinas College and Belmont University, where he graduated with honors in Accounting and Finance. He was employed by Thomas Nelson Publishing Company and World Bible Society. He also served honorably in the United States Army as an SP-E4 at Fort Dix, New Jersey, and Germany.

Mr. Dickey was an avid athlete throughout his life, and followed his children and grandchildren throughout their sports activities. He was a lifetime YMCA member where he was known as "Downtown Dickey" and "Horsey."

Harry loved his family and extended family unconditionally. In fact, he loved nothing better than joining together with his family to tell "stories" and eat Banana Pudding. One of his favorite pastimes was watching sports on television and while it was muted, he would listen to a different sporting event on the radio.

Mr. Dickey is survived by his wife, Susan Waynick; a son, Robert (R. A.) Dickey (Anne); a daughter, Jane Watson (Keith); and grandchildren, Abby Bumbalough, Kaitlyn Watson, Jordan McCroskey, Mary Gabriel, Lila, Eli, and Van Dickey.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2015 at two-thirty in the afternoon, at Woodlawn-Roesch-Patton Funeral Home's Dignity Hall. Visitation will take place from one until service time at two-thirty.

I worked with Harry at Thomas Nelson for many years and considered him a special friend. I know he had to cover for my ignorance a couple of times in the early years...all without my knowledge. He was a friend to everyone, fun and just a blast to work with. We also sold Christmas trees together one year, which was a hoot. He was a character and there isn't another like him. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

Always enjoyed playing B'Ball with Harry at the Y. He would put it up from way beyond the 3 point line and all you would hear is swish.

Harry hired me on at Thomas Nelson back in 1989. He was a true joy to work for. I also rented a house from him and Susan for a time. I have had several bosses since (all here at Nelson) but he will always remain one of the best I've ever had. He was so funny and I still tell "Harry stories" from time to time. God bless you all. "sorry for your loss" just doesn't come close to expressing how I feel.

He was such a friendly nice guy. When I worked at the Downtown Y in the 90', he would come in everyday and light up that lobby with his smile and enthusiasm. Each time I saw him he talked about how proud he was of his son, RA. My prayers are with the Dickey family.

I thought a lot of Harry. I worked for him at Silver Bells Music. He was a GREAT GUY and was the first to teach me computer skills. He made it so easy to understand the computer. I'm still using those skills today and think of him often. He is sure to be missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. Ellen Ramsey

A man's influence can be seen in the lives of his children, To watch R.A. act, speak, and live speaks volumes about Harry's life, and the way he and Susan raised their children. As the Dickeys -- especially Harry -- appear to value and embrace an extended family, it is only fitting that your son's extended family from Canada send sincere condolences and hold you in their collective thoughts. God bless you all.

I'm shocked and saddened to hear if Harry's passing. He was one of a kind and was liked by everyone. Will always remember working with Harry at Thomas Nelson and playing softball with him for many years. At many games we were short one player and right at forfeit time only to see Harry running from the parking lot frantically pulling on his cleats and jersey. That was our friend Harry.

Harry was like a brother to me from the moment I joined the family. He was always genuine and sincere and positive! The thing that I will miss most is him appearing unexpectedly, walking straight into the house and heading for the fridge first to see what was good to snack on! He was comfortable wherever he was and made those around him feel the same. He will be missed dearly.

Rest in Peace, Harry. You were
