Harry A. Hertline
New Hartford/Utica
August 14, 1932-January 15, 2023
Harry Andrew Hertline, 90, of New Hartford and formerly of Utica, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, January 15, 2023.
Harry was born on August 14, 1932 in
Camden, NJ, the son of the late John and Ethel (Baxter) Hertline. He attended Utica Free Academy and later continued his education at Utica College, graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration. Mr. Hertline served his country with honor in the United States Air Force during the Korean War.
While serving in the Air Force in England, Harry met the love of his life, Janet Millwood. They were united in marriage in Nottingham, England on August 7, 1954. They had a blessed union of over 68 years filled with love and mutual devotion.
In 1955, they settled in Utica, where Harry was employed with General Electric as a contract administrator and manager in the aerospace division. He retired after many years of dedicated service. He was a member of Grace Church in Utica, the New Hartford American Legion Post 1376, the West Utica Democratic Club and Polish Community Club, as well as many other organizations. Harry enjoyed playing softball on local teams in the 1960's. He loved Syracuse Sports and tried to never miss watching a SU football or basketball game.
Harry had a distinguished career and service to Oneida County as a legislator, representing the 22nd district in West Utica for 29 years. He acted as the Democratic Minority Leader part of the time while there. Harry served on many committees, but his particular interest was the development of the Oneida-Herkimer Recycling Center and Solid Waste Authority. In his 80's, Harry learned how to use an ipad for the Authority business, at times attending committee meetings via Zoom. He continued to serve as a co-treasurer on the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority until his death. Harry was very civic minded and loved serving the people within his community.
Harry was an avid lover of memories, both as a great storyteller himself, and as a keeper of many mementos over the years, much to the chagrin of his wife. If you were lucky enough to step foot in his home office, it most certainly included a tour of his service plaques and precious life memories. Without a doubt, his most favorite accomplishment was that of his family, whom he loved so well.
Harry was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather (pop-pop) and great grandfather, who cherished the time that he spent with his family. He especially loved to entertain his grandchildren and great grandchildren with his silly antics. He was a strong advocate of education and supported his grandchildren in their many endeavors. His devotion to all of his family will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife, Janet, of 68 years; his children, Sharon (Joseph) Nassimos of Whitesboro, Toni Ann Linder of Verona, and Richard Hertline of New Hartford; his grandchildren, Joanna (Frank) Zogby, Nicholas (Mackenzie Mortensen) Nassimos, Aaron (Sarah) Linder, Briana Linder, Evan Linder, Courtney (Brandon Cleave) Hertline, Rachel Hertline, and Katie Hertline; his great grandchildren, Madelyn, Claire, and Landon; a brother, John Hertline of New Hartford, and also many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters, Mary (Mac) McMahon, and Anna (Donald) Welty, also a brother-in-law, Michael (Eunice) Millwood, and his favorite canine companion, Barney Beagle.
