Elk Grove, CA — Hartley W. Ohlsen Jr, 76, passed away on August 26, 2025, at his home in Elk Grove, California. He was born on April 3, 1949, in Marquette, Michigan.
Hartley was a lifelong adventurer and gearhead who lived for horsepower, dirt trails, and loud music. Whether it was tearing through the sand dunes of Brawley, CA in his dune buggy or cruising the streets in a classic muscle car, Hartley found joy behind the wheel. He loved the rumble of an engine, the smell of gasoline, and the freedom of the open road.
Although health challenges in the last several years kept Hartley from driving, he never lost his spirit or his love for the road. He continued to talk cars, share stories, and keep his adventurous fire alive. His passion for engines, music, and open spaces remained as strong as ever.
His love of off-roading and cars was matched by his lifelong devotion to music, especially The Doors. Jim Morrison’s lyrics echoed through his life, and Hartley lived them fully: “Break on through to the other side.” He had a fearless heart, a sharp wit, and a deep love for family and freedom.
Hartley is survived by his beloved wife, Prudence Ohlsen; daughters, Jamie Garrett and Heather Barbosa; son in laws, Paul Garrett and Moses Barbosa and his cherished grandson, Noah Barbosa. He is also survived by his sister, Cassandra Ohlsen; brother, Les (wife Denise) Kangas; and nephew, Adam (wife Melissa) Castillo.
In keeping with Hartley’s wishes, no services will be held.
Friends and loved ones are encouraged to honor Hartley’s memory in their own way—take a ride down a back road, feel the engine roar, turn up The Doors, and remember a man who lived full throttle, never stopped dreaming, and always made room for one more adventure.
“There are things known and things unknown and in between are the doors.” – Jim Morrison
