After seeing the photo of Harvey, I know he was my squad leader in heavy Equipment platoon B Company 589th Engr Bn at Ft, Hood and then Vietnam. He was a good leader and better friend. He let me ship a window fan in with our other equipment to Vietnam. I was the only soldier in the company to have box fan blowing on me while sleeping. Prayers for the family. RIP soldier. Photo was taken by Larry Burkes while waiting at Ft. Hood on the train ride to Oakland, California, April 1967 enroute to Vietnam. SSgt. Gariepy, second from left. He was ten years older than me.

Harvey was a go-to colleague and a steadfast friend for several years. His quiet way and steady hand will be missed by all who got to know him. In honor of his decades of military service, an American flag that has flown over Normandy American Cemetery in France was retired yesterday in a short ceremony and is on its way for presentation to Karen. Mary, Grace, Jack and I were glad to know Harvey and Karen - and we will continue to support Karen through this difficult time..
Harvey will be missed.
