Harvey Weiss Obituary

WEISS, Dr. Harvey Alan

Dr. Harvey A. Weiss of Egremont, MA, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was eighty-seven years old.

Dr. Weiss was born in Detroit, MI, on January 29, 1937, the eldest of the four children of Seymour and Belle Weiss. He graduated from Mumford High School in 1954 and enrolled at the University of Michigan's program in pre-medicine. He earned his M.D. from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1961.

Dr. Weiss accumulated many professional honors and accolades as a plastic surgeon based in Atlanta, GA from 1970 until his retirement in 2003. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, attaining the rank of major while stationed as a medical officer at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, MS, from 1968–1970. This was during the Vietnam War, and Dr. Weiss frequently treated American and South Vietnamese personnel wounded in combat and transported to the U.S. for medical attention.

Dr. Weiss served as Chief of Surgery at Northside Hospital in Atlanta, while creating a successful private practice as well, specializing in hand and cleft-palate reconstruction, burn treatment, and other procedures vital to the recovery and quality of life of his patients. He is remembered fondly by former colleagues, nurses, and patients for his professionalism, medical skill, compassion, and good humor. He was an avid reader and an enthusiastic student of history, particularly that of the Second World War, of which he had vivid memories as a child on the home front from 1941–1945. His erudition and love of learning exerted a powerful influence on his children, Michael, Kimberly, and David. Dr. Weiss loved being outdoors and supported numerous environmental causes. He enjoyed nothing more than tending to his property while riding his tractor. He often remarked that in a different life he would have been perfectly happy as a simple farmer, and those who knew him saw that he was a gifted and responsible steward of the land.

Dr. Weiss is survived by Jeanne Weiss, his wife of twenty-eight years; his siblings, Janice Weiss Rabkin of Seattle, WA, Doreen Weiss Gimlen of Theodosia, MO; his children, Michael Weiss of Charlotte, NC, Kimberly Weiss Nystrom of Killingworth, CT, David Weiss of Marietta, GA; his stepson, Jason Wyche of Brooklyn, NY; his grandchildren, Greta and Malin Nystrom, Meredith and Ansley Weiss; and his step-grandchildren, Nara and Ise Wyche.
