Harvie Oliver Obituary

Harvie Lee Oliver Jr., 72, of Lower Burrell, transitioned peacefully into the arms of his heavenly father Friday, April 28, 2023, at Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, surrounded by his loving family. Born Feb. 25, 1951, in New Kensington, he lived in the New Kensington area his entire life. Harvie was a member of Bibleway Christian Fellowship Church, where he faithfully attended in his later years. Harvie enjoyed living life to the fullest. His infectious smile and generosity touched the heart, soul and spirit of everyone he met. He was one of the kindest people you could ever meet. Harvie was a member of several social clubs where he perfected his pool game and tried to hustle you out of your money. He enjoyed listening to music and played bass guitar with the band, "Senior Moments" and several other bands over the years. In addition, he enjoyed watching the Pittsburgh Steelers, completing sudoku puzzles, playing cards, backgammon and chess with his friends and family. Harvie also liked spending time at the river looking for crayfish, so he could catch "that big fish." Most importantly, he enjoyed spending time and playing with his great-grandchildren. Harvie was a 1970 graduate of Valley High School. The stories of his athletic prowess are legendary in the Alle-Kiski area. He has held various track and field records, while at least one remains unbroken to this day. You would often hear stories of him jumping out of the long jump pit or do something extraordinary on an athletic field. He was an all-around naturally gifted athlete. Harvie was preceded in death by his parents, Harvie Lee Oliver Sr., in 2004; Eunice (Furr) Oliver, in 2005; and a niece, Tara G. Rowe, in 2001. Survivors include six children, LeeAnn (Shawn) Cunningham, of Lower Burrell, Gayly (Joseph) Crawford, of Gibsonia, Harvie (Lucretia) Oliver, of Dumfries, Va., April (Brandon) Green, of Ravena, N.Y., DeDeshia (Kevin) Trammell-Mariner, of New Kensington, and Wyatt "Tony" (Stephanie) Newton, of Pittsburgh; three brothers, James (Irene), of Seattle, Wash., Hollin "Tommy" (Carina) West, of New Kensington, and Wally (Debbie) Dorsey, of New Kensington; and three sisters, Regina (Larry) Rowe, of Arnold, Carol (Darryl) Daughtry, of Pittsburgh, and Lamonica "Cherokee" Fields, of Creighton; 23 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and one on the way; long time partner, Yvonne "Sue" Jackson; three additional grandchildren that he loved like his own; and a host of nieces and nephews. Viewing will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 4, 2023, in ROSS G. WALKER FUNERAL HOME LTD., 217 Freeport Road, New Kensington. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 5, 2023, in Bibleway Christian Fellowship Church, 504 Eighth St., New Kensington. The Rev. Mitchel Nickols will officiate. Burial will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park, Lower Burrell. Anyone attending the service is asked to go directly to the church.

Harvey was such a great athlete on the track team at Valley High School. I worked out with him on the Triple Jump but could never get close to his record breaking jumps! Such a loss! RIP

Yes for sure Harvey was one of the kindest soft spoken people you'd ever meet... So much fun and lots of laughs we had through the years .football and on the track team..The man was built like a muscular Roman statue, though he never lifted weights. I've watched him jump flat footed from the ground to the bed of stake truck, dunk a basketball ., the ball rolling down from his hand, and putting it through the net with his elbow, was there seeing him jump OUT the long jump box, and the triple jump, forget about it.. Probably least 10 years I ran into him down New Ken one day..both of us, our eyes and smiles lit up, much love through the years. So, see you again my friend..so glad to hear that we've ended up having the same FATHER..

First of all it was his smile that you noticed. Then if you saw him triple jump one would wonder if he didn´t have a cape under his shirt. If you meet him on the street he always had that smile an a hand shake for you.

I was privileged to know Harvie during my high school years at Valley High. He was an ideal teammate on our basketball squad. Always ready to flash his broad smile and offer words of encouragement. I could find no mean bone in his body. Whether he was playing or sitting on the bench, Harvie was the same warm and humble individual. May he enjoy the loving embrace of Jesus for all eternity.

Harvie was such a kind and soft-spoken man (at least to me he was). He played in "The Senior Moments" band with my cousin Fred Vining and Howard Clements, both of Lincoln Beach. Harvie played with the group at my daughter's wedding back in 2010 (at the "Beach"). He will be sorely missed. GOD BLESS the family! You have my deepest sympathy and condolences!

Watching Harvie play basketball was one of the brightest moments in high school for me. I graduated from Valley with Harvie in 1970. He was always so kind! Condolences to the family.

Harvie was a friend of my brother, Solly, when I was young and subsequently a friend of our family afterwards. When I was in Junior High, he helped to coach me in long jumping and triple jump. When I was in high school, he came back to help Coach Rowe with the long jumpers. He was always generous and patient in teaching. Later in life, I found that he was also a good musician. I'm sure there was so much more to him than I knew but what I did know was he was a fine and humble human being even with his prodigious athletic ability. My condolences go out to his family and loved ones. Martin "Charlie" Thomas
