Hazel Marie Frederick (née Williams), age 104, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 31, 2025. She was born on May 27, 1921, in Negaunee, Michigan.
Beloved wife of the late Hollis Frederick, whom she married October 11, 1941, and who preceded her in death on March 18, 1975; loving mother of Ronald (Linda) and Joan (Michael Serge); adored grandmother of John (Maria) Frederick, Chris (Ashley) Frederick, Gena (Christopher Wegienka), and Katie (Matthew Blue); beloved great-grandmother of Max, Belle, Tyler, Luke, Claire, Jackson, Parker, and Madeline; cherished mother and special grandmother of the Serge family; devoted daughter of the late Fred and Hazel (née Cameron) Williams; dear sister of the late Roy and Edward; and fond aunt, great-aunt and friend to many.
Hazel was born in Negaunee, Michigan, in 1921, the youngest of three children to Fred and Hazel (née Cameron) Williams. She had two brothers, two step brothers and two step sisters. They were a loving family with many traditions that she passed down to her own family. Affectionately known as Marie, Grandma Marie, or Grandma Darling to all who loved and adored her.
She grew up in her family's home in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and later moved to Detroit with her father and stepmother, Ann. It was in Detroit where she met her beloved husband, Hollis Frederick, originally of Haleyville, Alabama. They were married in 1941 and soon welcomed two children, Ron and Joan. Hazel was deeply devoted to her family and her role as a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Hazel worked for many years at Hudson's, a well-known retailer in Detroit, starting in a clerical position. She enjoyed assisting customers and building relationships with others, particularly during her time working at the Estee Lauder counter at Northland Mall until her retirement. Her family was the center of her life, and she expressed her love through acts of kindness such as cooking, baking, crocheting, taking shopping trips, and caring for her grand-dogs. Her family fondly remembers her homemade salsa, pecan pie, ambrosia salad, and vegetable soup, among many other treats. Marie was always complimented on the pride she took in her appearance, and her granddaughters will forever cherish memories of her well-maintained hair, fashion, and perfectly manicured nails.
Everyone who met Marie enjoyed her conversations, laughter, and the genuine thoughtfulness she shared. She always lived close to her family. There was nothing she would not do for them. She was such a strong and inspirational woman, sharing her humor and words of wisdom with her grandchildren and all who knew her. They created many cherished memories together. She loved watching her great-children grow up and happily celebrated her 90th and 100th birthdays with wonderful parties surrounded by family and friends.
The family will privately celebrate her life at a later date. Burial will be with her loving husband, Hollis, at Grand Lawn Cemetery in Detroit, Michigan. To plant a beautiful memorial tree in memory of Hazel, please visit our Tree Store.
