Obituary published on Legacy.com by Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Directors on Feb. 11, 2026.
Hazel Honey McKee died Monday, February 9, 2026 in Little Rock, Arkansas, with her family by her side.
Hazel was born to Thompson Wirt Walker, Sr., and Lottie Robertson Walker (Coffman) in
Monroeville, Alabama on February 24, 1932. At the age of five her family moved to Monticello, Arkansas to be close to her mother's family.
She was educated in Monticello Public Schools and graduated from Monticello High School in 1950. Upon graduating from high school Hazel enrolled in Arkansas A&M College (now The University of Arkansas at Monticello) to pursue a degree in Education. There she met her first husband Bert Honey. After marriage and the completion of her degree the newlyweds moved to Rison, Arkansas, where they both taught school and Bert coached.
Later in the 1950's they moved to
Pine Bluff, Arkansas where Hazel taught school at Dollarway High and Bert served as coach, and later principal at White Hall High. Hazel was active in the First Presbyterian Church in Pine Bluff. She learned to play golf at Rosswood Country Club, where she made many friends and participated in the Ladies Golf Association.
In 1969 Hazel retired early from teaching to raise her son. Upon leaving her position at Dollarway the 1969 yearbook was dedicated in her honor as she was a popular teacher. Later in the 1970's she taught part-time at Pines Vo-Tech and Jefferson Preparatory School.
After Bert's untimely death in 1981, she worked as a church secretary in Pine Bluff. Upon retirement in the mid 1990's she continued to be active in the community, volunteering at the Southeast Arkansas Arts and Science Center.
In 1998 she was introduced to Bob McKee by an old friend. She and Bob hit it off, were soon married, and retired to the coast in Rockport, Texas, where she enjoyed playing golf, traveling with Bob, watching the coastal wildlife, and maintaining a beautiful flower garden.
A few years after Bob's death in 2013, Hazel moved back to Arkansas to be close to family. Hazel liked things how she liked them and was not afraid to let you know it. She was a dyed in the wool New Deal Democrat, open minded and progressive for her time, and instilled her traditional values of hard work, conscientiousness, and the value of education in her family. Although not evident, she could surprise you sometimes with her wry sense of humor.
Hazel was predeceased by her parents, two husbands, and her brother and his wife, Thompson (Tommy) Wirt Walker, Jr., and Pat Walker of Monticello. She is survived by her son, Dan Honey and his wife Kensey of Little Rock, grandchildren Anna Lee and Benjamin Honey, her niece and nephew, Lou Strain (Mike) of St. Joe, Arkansas, Charles Walker (Liz) of Baton Rouge, their children, and her devoted caregiver Julie McKinney, to whom the family is eternally grateful.
