Obituary for Hector Castro Sr.
Hector Castro, 74, of
Union, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on January 3, 2026. A man of deep faith, sharp wit, and a generous heart, Hector's life was a testament to the power of hard work and compassion.
Born in Lares, Puerto Rico, Hector moved to New Jersey in the 1970s with a relentless drive to build a better life. With no formal resources, he turned to the local library, teaching himself to read and developing the skills that would allow him to become a staple of the Newark community. His commitment to learning was a lifelong pursuit; he later returned to school to earn his GED and furthered his education by completing a certificate in Air Conditioning, Refrigeration, and Heating Technology at Lincoln Technical Institute. This achievement reflected his discipline and his desire to constantly better himself. Throughout his life, he remained an avid reader, always eager to expand his mind.
For many years, Hector was the proud owner of several local bodegas in the lates 80's and early 90's, where he was far more than a businessman; he was a lifeline. Following his time as a business owner, Hector transitioned to a new chapter, working as a forklift driver for Seton Leather Company. He was a dedicated and reliable employee there until his well-earned retirement in the early 2000s.
Above all his professional achievements, Hector was a devoted father. He shared his life and raised his three children with his first wife, working tirelessly to ensure they had everything they needed. Hector loved his children unconditionally and, through every challenge, he never let them down. His children will forever remember him as a man who always showed up.
Beyond his responsibilities, Hector was known for his vibrant sense of humor. He loved making people laugh with his quick wit and jokes. He was a passionate sports fan who never missed a chance to watch a boxing match, cheered for the Giants football team and Yankees baseball team, and recently discovered a love for soccer. He also loved to cook when he could, finding joy in preparing meals.
His faith was the cornerstone of his life. As a dedicated Jehovah's Witness, Hector truly loved attending the congregation and being among his peers. He thrived on the time spent with his "faith-family," sharing stories and enjoying the simple joy of being together. It was within this faith community that he found his wife, Maria Castro, and they shared four years of marriage.
Hector is survived by his wife, Maria; his two sons, Hector Manuel Castro Jr. and Jesus Castro; and his daughter, Brenda Castro. He was the proud grandfather of his only granddaughter, Breana Gilliard. He also leaves behind his brother and sister in Massachusetts, along with many nieces and nephews who will forever cherish his memory.
