Hedwig "Hedy" E. Borst, 84, of Shillington, passed away on Sunday, March 1, 2026, in the care of Reading Hospital. She was the loving wife of James M. Borst. Highschool sweethearts, they married on July 10, 1965, following his military service.
Born in Reading to the late Joseph and Ludwina (Wackerle) Gmeiner, Hedy graduated with honors from Central Catholic in 1959. She previously worked as a secretary for Seaman Mills Supplies and Lucent Technology, and she retired after 13 years with Carpenter Technology.
She was a devoted wife and mother. A member of St. John Baptist de la Salle Church, she was an active member of the Prime Timers group. Very energetic and always active, Hedy loved being present with people. For many years she volunteered at Berks Heim assisting with patient transport and beautifying the grounds through gardening. Together, for over 30 years, she and Jim volunteered delivering Meals on Wheels to the community.
Left to treasure her memory are her husband, James; their son, James T. Borst of Shillington; and her sister, Marion Boulanger-McCoy, widow of Richard D. McCoy, of Reading. Hedwig is also survived by her nieces, nephews, and their families.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Hedy's memory may be offered to Meals on Wheels, checks payable to Berks Encore, 40 N. 9th Street, Reading PA 19601.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Hedwig on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at St. John Baptist de la Salle, 42 Kerrick Rd, Shillington, PA 19607, with committal to follow at Gethsemane Cemetery's Chapel of St. George. Viewing and visitation will be held at the church from 9:00 a.m. until the start of Mass.
