Helen O. Nelson Anderson, age 93, of Grand Rapids, Minnesota passed away at Home and Comfort, Coleraine, Minnesota on September 27, 2025.
Helen Ovedia Berg was born June 5, 1932 in Butte, North Dakota one of nine children born to Sanna (Ness) and Kasper Berg. Their family moved to Hill City, Minnesota and made northern Minnesota home. Helen graduated from Grand Rapids Central School at the age of 16. After her graduation, she traveled to California for a time and returned back to Minnesota. She met and married Alfred R. Nelson on September 15, 1954. Together, they raised five children on a farm in Goodland, Minnesota.
After selling the farm, Helen moved to Grand Rapids and went to work at J.C. Penney. She loved her job and all her friends she made over her 20 years of employment. Later in life, Helen married Richard Anderson. He preceded her in death June 26, 2024.
Helen can be remembered for her love of reading – she would read anything! She would complete a 400-page novel in a day and would remember every detail. She was also an avid sports fan enjoying all sport from baseball to hockey. She was a devoted Hallmark movie buff enjoying each new movie that was created.
Helen is preceded in death by her parents, Kasper and Sanna; her eight siblings and their spouses; and one granddaughter.
She will be deeply missed by her children, Johnnie Gilder, Alfred (Ruby) Nelson, Raymond (Kerry) Nelson, Gary (Jolie) Nelson, and Julie Nelson; 14 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren.
Special thanks to the staff at Home and Comfort and St. Croix Hospice for the exceptional care provided to Helen.
A celebration of Helen's life is planned for Sunday, October 12, 2025 from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Blackberry Community Center, Blackberry, Minnesota. Interment will be in Hazelwood Cemetery, Blackberry, Minnesota.
