Helen Assmann Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Dooley Colonial Home - Westfield on Sep. 13, 2022.
It is with profound sadness that the family of Helen Flagg Assmann announces her death in her home on Wednesday, 7 September with her devoted sons at her side.
She was born on 20 March 1924 in Waupaca Wi., the youngest of four children by the late Harry J. and Mabel M. Flagg. She was predeceased by her siblings James H. Flagg, Kathleen S. Pattyson, Donald L. Flagg and nephew Michael Pattyson.
Helen spent her childhood and adolescent years with her family in Rome, NY until she graduated from Syracuse University where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. After graduation she joined her family that had moved to Westfield, NJ and entered the business world, working for NJ Bell Telephone where she advanced to the position of business office supervisor. It was during those years that she met her future husband, Arthur. They married in July 1956 and bought a house in Westfield. The following year, she sacrificed her career to start their family and together they began raising their children.
Hud, as she was called by her relatives and friends, used her creative talents to make crafts with a group from the Westfield Women's Club, donating some of them to various causes. She also gave of her time in service to others by delivering meals to the elderly and by volunteering in a nursing home.
Later in life when Art became ill, she took care of him until his death in May 1997 with the same selfless love and devotion that she exhibited with her family throughout her life.
Of paramount importance to Helen was her devotion to the traditional Catholic faith. She loved our Lord Jesus Christ and Mary, The Mother of God and regularly prayed her Rosary.
Helen is survived by her sons Christopher F. and Donald A. (Barbara), nephew Brian Pattyson, niece Kathy Pattyson Merkh, grandsons James (Kimberly) and Christopher and great grandsons Ryan and Dylan.
Funeral arrangements and burial are private.
