Helen J. Byrd, 90, of Louisville, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 26, 2025. Born on August 10, 1934, in Cave City, Kentucky, to Skylarh and Harret Poynter, Helen lived a life full of joy, laughter, and love. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, cherished by her family and friends for her kind heart, sharp wit, and infectious sense of humor.
Helen was a true character, known for her sassy spirit and quick comebacks. Her humor lit up every room she entered, and she was a true hoot to be around. But beneath her playful exterior was a woman who was wise beyond measure, always ready to share a word of advice or a nugget of wisdom with anyone who needed it.
An excellent cook, Helen’s home was always filled with the comforting aromas of her latest creation, and she took great pride in keeping a tidy, welcoming space for her loved ones. Her greatest joy was found in the moments spent with family, and her laughter and warmth will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
In her spare time, Helen found peace and joy in tending to her flower garden, where she could immerse herself in nature's beauty. She also had a love for dancing, and she could often be found at her "Tea Dances," enjoying the rhythm of her favorite music—especially the soulful sounds of Tom Jones.
Helen’s memory will be carried on by her beloved children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all those who were fortunate enough to share in the joy of her life. She leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and wisdom that will forever remain in our hearts.
Helen will be missed, but her spirit, humor, and love will continue to shine in the lives she touched.
Helen is preceded in death by her son, James Maxie Byrd; parents, Skylarh Poynter, and Harret Blair Poynter; 6 siblings, Curtis Poynter, Warren Poynter, Ruby Jean Chapman, William Poynter, JV Poynter, and Clarence Poynter; and her ex-husband, Maxie Byrd.
