Helen Louise Neuenschwander was born on August 31, 1929, in Fairmont, Minnesota, to Fred and Frieda (Hinrick) Neuenschwander. She graduated from Fairmont High School. On July 4, 1948, Helen was united in marriage to Carl Einard Hanson. The couple met while Carl was in Fairmont working for the railroad. Together, Carl and Helen returned to Austin to live and raise their family. She worked for 17 years at J. C.
