Helen Mathis Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Albritten's Funeral Service - Dawson on Jul. 30, 2025.
Helen Renfroe Mathis was born on June 26, 1946, in Terrell County, Georgia, to the late Eugene Renfroe, Sr., and the late Mamie Brown Renfroe. Raised in a loving and faith-filled home, Helen embraced Christian values early in life. As a young girl, she gave her life to Christ and became a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of Reverend E. D. Sims. Helen was a proud graduate of George Washington Carver High School, Class of 1964. She furthered her education at Albany Technical School (now Albany Technical College), where she earned a certification in Information Office Technology. Throughout her life, Helen held various professional positions and ultimately retired in 2010 as a Dietitian from Lee State Prison in Leesburg, Georgia. On June 11, 1964, Helen was united in holy matrimony to Aris C. Mathis, Jr. Their union was blessed with four children. She was preceded in death by three of them, Donald, Kenneth, and Phyllis. Helen was also preceded in death by her parents; in-laws, Aris Sr. and Gladys Mathis; brothers, Eugene Renfroe, Jim Renfroe, and Rochester Renfroe; sisters, Virginia Brown, Marzette Lucas, and Eginee Green; and four nieces, Jaqueline Brown, Brittany Boyer, Monyette Renfroe, and Katrina Renfroe. On Monday, July 28, 2025, our beloved Helen heard the gentle whisper of the Lord saying, "Come home, it's time to rest." She peacefully departed this life, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, and cherished memories. Helen leaves to forever cherish her memory: her husband of 61 years, Aris Mathis, Jr.; loving son, Derrick Mathis; one sister, Carolyn Clark; and one brother, Charles Renfroe (Barbara). She was a proud and loving grandmother to Blake Mathis, Nicolus Mathis, and DeMarkel Hallback, whom she lovingly raised from a toddler. Helen's memory will also be treasured by her nieces, Deshia Renfroe, Kimberly Clark, Felesha Renfroe, Tara Green, Laura Green, Shontrese Renfroe, Joann Renfroe, and Sonja Lucas; and nephews, Ricky Mathis, Terrance Mays, Charles Brown, Alfred Green, Arthur Lucas, and Lynnrick Rogers. She is also survived by a devoted cousin raised as a sister, Diane Chambers; three loving sisters-in-law, Josie Renfroe, Mary Minter, and Mattie Renfroe; and three dear and faithful friends, Betty Sue Glover, Charlie Mae Walton and Ruth Harvey. Helen's warmth, strength, and kindness touched many, and she will be remembered fondly by three great-grandchildren and a host of cousins, other extended family, and friends.
