Helen Marie Sample, 87, passed away peacefully and went to meet her Heavenly Father on Tuesday September 26, 2023. Helen was born on June 2nd, 1936 in
Texas City, TX to Ernest Bee Smith and Irene Smith. She was one of thirteen children.
Helen was a loving and dedicated daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and aunt. She loved deeply and brought pure joy and laughter to those around her. She had a special way of making everyone feel like family, even strangers.
Helen claims that she was no saint, although her family would say otherwise. In her teens Helen drove her brother's car in the powder puff races at the age of 16. The car was originally bought for her brother who raced it as well. Her father taught her how to work on the car and ultimately how to race.
In her adult life she worked in the Texas City ISD as a school cook. In her spare time, she loved to bake. She would make several delicious pies then would take them with her as tokens of love and appreciation to just about anyone she met and knew. A chosen few were lucky enough to of had her special "salt pie". She had a wonderful sense of humor as well.
She was a talented seamstress and loved to dress up in handmade lavish costumes with her grandchildren. They would get dressed up and host performances in the living room where they danced and sang karaoke.
Helen was a devoted member of the Texas City Church of the Nazarene in
Texas City, TX, she joined in 1958. She was a door greeter there from 1998-2007 where she would greet churchgoers at the doors with her warm welcoming smile. A smile that was contagious.
She is preceded in death by her parents; beloved daughter, Mary Ann Green Allen; husbands, Elmer "Dale" Green and Harold T Sample; brothers, Ernest Smith, Robert Smith, Wort Smith, Buddy Smith, Butch woods, Pete Woods, Toothsome Smith; sisters, Louise Hertenberger and baby girl Thelma.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her 3 sons, Melvin Green and wife Melody; Thomas Sample and wife Monica; and Robert Sample and wife Paula, sisters, Beatrice Robles and Doris Flora, Brother Bill Ed Smith; grandchildren, Amy Allen Garcia, Amber Green-Barbour, Drew Allen, Josh Sample, Blyth Hardesty, Heather Sample, Harold Sample and Jonathan Sample; seventeen great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers are Drew Allen, Josh Sample, Harold Sample, Jonathan Sample, Eli Sample and David Sample.
In lieu of flowers, Helen asked that donations be made to the
American Cancer Society in honor of her daughter Mary Ann. The family also ask's that you consider a donation to the
Alzheimer's Association in Helen's honor.
Helen will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
