Helen Sholar Obituary
Helen Sholar, of Hampstead, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on August 20th at the age of 88.
She was welcomed into Heaven's gates by her mother and father, Catherine Batts and Henry Dunn Lanier as well as her sister, Ruby Grace, and brothers Vernice, Curtis, Carlo, David, and Joe Lanier.
She leaves behind her husband of 55 years, Lonnie Sholar, and her two children Johnny Nethercutt and Donna Smith along with their families.
Ms. Helen's greatest love was her family. She was blessed with a tight knit family that loved her dearly and stayed by her bedside in her final days. From her son Johnny and his wife Virginia, she has one grandson, Christopher Canuel (Meredith) and ten great grandchildren: Jason, Noah, Caleb, Amelia, Sarah Grace, David, Hannah, Joshua, Elijah, and Abigail.
From her daughter Donna and her husband Rickey, she has two grandchildren, Jeffrey Smith (Kimberly) and Kayla Kowalski (Alex), and three great grandchildren: Connor Smith and Charlie Mae and Parker Kowalski.
She also leaves behind two brothers Hardy and Poley Lanier, and countless nieces, nephews, and loved-ones through marriage.
She took great pride in her profession as a hairdresser and humbly served her customers for 62 years until the Covid pandemic led her to roll her final perm.
Ms. Helen was an active member of Barlow Vista Baptist Church for 53 years, serving on the hospitality and decorating committees for many years and working with the children through Mission Friends and Vacation Bible School. In her later years, she joyfully worked with the Piecemakers Sewing Circle. Through church, she gained her greatest friendships with Jewel Weatherspoon, Linda Thompson, Hilda Edens, and Dr. Bill Guthrie..
Outside of work and church, she most enjoyed sewing flags and quilts, cooking big family dinners, and baking desserts. She welcomed everyone into her home with unparalleled kindness and hospitality. She truly had a servant's heart and made everyone feel cherished and seen.
In her final years, she battled an autoimmune disease that required periodic infusion treatments. Through this, she was fortunate to have the kindest in-home nurse, Joni Kane, that loved her tenderly for nearly 15 years.
At her request, a family graveside service will take place on Sunday, August 31 at 3:00 at Barlow Vista Baptist Church. The family will receive guests from 4:00 to 6:00 at the Sholar residence.
In lieu of flowers, please consider an offering to the Piecemakers of her beloved Barlow Vista Baptist Church, or to The Foster Grandparent Program so that all children can experience a Nana's love.
